Kitaro

Masanori Takahashi better known as Kitarō, (February 4, 1953) is a Grammy award-winning Japanese musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In the early 1970s, he changed completely to keyboards. He joined the band "Far East Family Band" and toured with them around the world. In Europe, he met the German synthesizer musician and former Tangerine Dream member Klaus Schulze. Schulze produced two albums for the band and gave Kitaro some tips for the use of synthesizers. In 1976 he left the band and travelled through Asia. Back in Japan, Kitaro started his solo career in 1977. The first two albums Ten Kai and From the Full Moon Story became cult favorites of fans of the nascent New Age movement.

Kitaro - Kojiki

Artist: Kitaro
P: 1990
Kitaro crafts this musical journey from the ancient chronicle (Kojiki) that recounts the birth of Japan and it’s people. Featuring the string section from the Skywalker Symphony, along with Kitaro’s signature keyboard and flute sounds, the score to this thematic backdrop is full of passion and beauty that is masterfully conceived, arranged and performed.
We learn from the liner notes of this 1990 release that Kojiki, is from the story of the same name familiar to Japanese school children, an ancient account of the creation of Japan. It is a mythical tale that provides a fitting thematic backdrop for the swelling symphonic flourishes that Kitaro uses liberally on this recording. Accompanied by a pop-rock ensemble, violinist Steve Kindler, and the string section from George Lucas's Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, Kitaro arranges a cinematic mix of drama and mystery that brings to mind the symphonic, crescendo-heavy side of John Tesh--appropriate for a fable that involves cataclysms, a hero's quest, a fair maiden, and a battle with an eight-headed dragon. Kitaro's keyboards and flutes are sometimes submerged in the mix, perhaps lost in the Celestial Rock Cave or swept away under the Bridge of Rainbows, but the intended attraction here is the widescreen flash and pop-orchestral dash generated by more than two-dozen pop and classical musicians. Overall, it may be a bit heavy-handed for New Age fans and a touch too pretty for progressive fans. The most effective piece is the disc's concluding work,"Reimei," a sweetly stirring, bell-chiming anthem. Overwrought to some, a masterpiece to others.

Kitaro - Kojiki: A Story in Concert DVD

Artist: Kitaro
P: 1999
His World Tour, recorded live, is even more forceful, intimate and direct than studio incarnations. Kojiki: A Story in Concert, translated as "The Record of Ancient Matters", is a compilation of traditional Japanese lore that was recited orally from generation to generation until the 8th century. Whether on the eerie "Hajimari", the lyrical "Sozo", the sorrowful "Koi", the haunting melancholy of "Nageki", or "Reimei", with its electric guitar jam session, Kitaro's music has never been sharper or more spirited.

Kitaro - Mizu Ni Inorite

Artist: Kitaro
P: 2004
"Mizu Ni Inori Te" is an album which collects tracks used for the Japanese TV show from the NHK network.
There are 3 new (read "previously unreleased, made especially for this album") tracks on this CD (tracks 1,4,5), and the title track alone makes this a worthwhile purchase: very reminiscent of the "Oasis" and "Silver Cloud" era, rich keyboard textures, soothing melody, a very healing track.
Only available as Japan import.
