Kitaro

Kitaro

Masanori Takahashi better known as Kitarō, (February 4, 1953) is a Grammy award-winning Japanese musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In the early 1970s, he changed completely to keyboards. He joined the band "Far East Family Band" and toured with them around the world. In Europe, he met the German synthesizer musician and former Tangerine Dream member Klaus Schulze. Schulze produced two albums for the band and gave Kitaro some tips for the use of synthesizers. In 1976 he left the band and travelled through Asia. Back in Japan, Kitaro started his solo career in 1977. The first two albums Ten Kai and From the Full Moon Story became cult favorites of fans of the nascent New Age movement.

Kitaro - Final Call

Artist: Kitaro
P: 2013
Kitaro created with "Final Call" a very interesting release. It's a change of experimental sounds with pieces that could be part of Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai. You can hear single sounds that were not used since Ten Kai. Other sounds are known from Kojiki or Gaia.Onbashira.
But the big surprise is the song "Traveler". The piece starts with a pizzicato sound and you expect something in the style of Cirque Ingenieux. At 1:40 suddenly the music changes and you get electronic music in best "Berlin School" tradition. The background rhythm sounds like "Rubycon 2" from the album "Rubycon" by the group Tangerine Dream, just a little bit faster. Kitaro also used the echo sound that Pink Floyd already used in the song "One Of Those Days" on the album "Meddle". Man, I love that combination!
What I don't like very much are the choir sounds that Kitaro used in three songs ("Final Call", Valley Of The Spirit" and "Solar Eclipse"). They sound too much like a sample library and esp. in "Solar Eclipse" it sounds like a "poor man's Enya choir". Disregarding the choir sounds I really recommand "Final Call".

Kitaro - Gaia Onbashira

Artist: Kitaro
P: 1997
Inspired by the centuries-old Onbashira Matsuri (Pillar Festival) in Japan, Gaia Onbashira is an ambitious work of programmatic (that is, inspired by an outside, non-musical event) music that combines ancient percussion and wind instruments with a modern approach and some excellent synthesizer work. This ambition is most fully realized on the two-part "Yamadashi," which progresses steadily from a low-key beginning to rhythmic, taiko-style drumming and singing. This progression from simple beginnings to more and more complex musical structures is a feature on this album; the only real exception is "Kiotoshi," which has a classical-style concerto construction. Kitaro's sweeping, cinematic style is impressive and often enchanting; one is often left wondering what would happen if he had a full orchestra to work with. --Genevieve Williams
Gaia Onbashira is a musical exploration of respect and how it relates to ancient traditions. Gaia loosely translates to Goddess of the Earth or Mother Earth and Onbashira is a festival that occurs every seven years in Japan. During the Onbashira festival, eight individuals are chosen for spiritually cleansing. The participants ascend a mountain and attempt to spiritually connect with the heavens through the trees. These trees are then allowed to fall down the mountain and eventually become posts and the foundation of a ceremonial shrine. Through these events, these individuals learn to become more in touch with their spirits. This album is a far-reaching journey that brings together influences of the East and West, past and present, history and future. These tracks resonate with earthly sounds and the history embodied in pre-Columbian wind and percussion instruments.

Kitaro - Heaven and Earth

Artist: Kitaro
P: 1993
The implementation of Vietname Songs and music instruments is brilliant. There are strong compelling theme songs in here--especially in "SAIGON REUNION". You hear this theme in MANY MOVIE TRAILERS. It's as intense as the piece "THEATER FIRE IN BROOKLYN" in COME SEE THE PARADISE by RANDY EDELMAN.
Kitaro also add some other themes which are more celebratory and not as somber as the theme in SAIGON REUNION.
