Netherworld

Alesandro Tedeschi is the man behind Netherworld, he tells the following about his music:
"Into the deepness of my essence there is a wired, dark, silent, glacial and eternal place. This imaginary place contains a sort of parallel reality that I've named Netherworld. Netherworld manifests itself to me as a kind of faster abstract sensation that I feel instantly and I catch up through the making of my music.
I switch, shift and record (with my microphones) environment's sounds and sibilance; for example a gate while it's opening, or a subterranean noise of a brook's courier, or also, ice's blocks motion, ghost's voices, gongs and crystals while broken.
I'm interested in catch up sounds generated from the nature's flow. Through my music, I would like to play the quietness of the silence, desolate darkness and glacial landscapes. In the year 2004 I've met Oophoi and I've also start to write music reviews on his magazine "Deep Listenings". Then I've published my first CD's in his record label "Umbra"."

Netherworld - Alchemy of Ice

Artist: Netherworld
P: 2013
The conceptual elements highlighted in the new work of NETHERWORLD are Alchemy - a view from the metaphysical point in both spiritual development and liberation - and the ice, the natural element essential for the achievement of eternity. In order to make the best quality sound for "Alchemy of Ice", the mastering of songs was entrusted to Denis Blackham (Skye Mastering Studio), famous throughout the world for having worked with top artists such as Fennesz, Biosphere , Edgar Froese, William Balinski, Coil and many others.

All the sound material was composed, mixed and created by Alessandro Tedeschi / NETHERWORLD through countless layers and manipulations made with analog sampler Roland VP9000

Alchemy of Ice is dedicated to OOPHOI, who passed away on April 2013.

Netherworld - Kall - the abyss where dreams fall

Artist: Netherworld
P: 2007
LTD 441
Kall - cold - is a four-part suite exposing the darker side of Alessandro Tedeschi´s musical persona.
Netherworld are the spiritual equivalents of Sleep Research Facility or possibly Lustmord, inhabiting the murky, nocturnal depths of the abyss. In Kall, they open with an exploration of subtle rhythmicity, underpinned with cavernous slabs of sound, and reverb-drenched atmospherics and incidentals that shift focus from foreground, to the muted tones of subterranean depths . The second part is more overtly rhythmic, and traverses similar territory to Test Dept, in their Programme For Progress incarnation, as various scrapings, and beatings shift and evaporate over dark, resonant textures. Part three is more vaporous, and ethereal, with splinters of lightness, and twinkling, glassy overtures to light the way through abyssal, claustrophobic dungeons, and frozen tunnels. Part four further reduces the soundscape, and we are left in darkness, populated by eerie, breathy movements, and occasional activity, like errant spirits wandering in the depths, this is a sublime, minimal atmosphere that finishes the piece perfectly. This is , once again, a competently rendered piece of dark atmospherica, housed in a beautifully crafted minimalist cover. A worthy addition to anyone with dark leanings, or a love of isolationism.

Netherworld - Morketid

Artist: Netherworld
P: 2007
Mørketid comes as the second release from Alessandro Tedeschi's own Glacial Movements label. The excellent sampler "Cryosphere" setting the tone in 2006. Apparently Mørketid is a Norwegian term for a certain period in the year when the Arctic winter cold encases everything and the sun doesn’t rise over the horizon at all. Alessandro explains that "into the deepness of my essence there is a wired, dark, silent, glacial and eternal place. This imaginary place contains a sort of parallel reality that I've named Netherworld. I switch, shift and record (with my microphones) environment's sounds and sibilance: a subterranean noise, ice blocks in motion, gongs and crystals while broken. Through my music, I would like to play the quietness of the silence, desolate darkness and glacial landscapes". Netherworld's resulting sound is a broad, understated richness that captures the mood of the globe's uninhabited extremities masterfully.

Netherworld - Over the Summit

Artist: Netherworld
P: 2011
Netherworld’s icy symphony is back as the moniker of Alessandro Tedeschi, Glacial Movements’s mind and arm. After having produced Mørketid – acclaimed by critics all over the world as a precious gem of ambient music, and featured on key compilations such as The Wire Tapper 22 (“Aurora Borealis” blu ice mix, edited for  The Wire), Zaum Vol.1 produced by the Ireland’s Psychonavigation, and also a split CD with the Canadian duo Nadja titled “Magma to Ice” (Fario Records).Throughout his own label, Netherworld has worked with internationally renowned artists such as Rapoon (ex Zoviet France), Lull (Mick Harris/Scorn), Francisco Lopez, Oophoi , and bvdub and has already planned new features with Thomas Koner, Loscil, Pjusk and emerging, new talent.
In the sound of the Roman artists, fragments of classical music blend with field recordings of every kind, voices and found sounds are manipulated, sampled and remixed, converting them in new frames and timbres likely to evoke rest and silence typical of the extensive glacial vastnesses. 3 years after his first full length CD, Netherworld comes back with this new work titled “Over the Summit,” in which enclosed memories, feelings, and past experiences, deeply lived during the years and surrounded by an almost deafening silence, can be heard and felt circling vast mountains’ snowy peaks.
The underlined aspect is the sensation of peacefulness or contemplation of an uncontaminated and silent nature, wrapped in the winter’s white blanket. For the six tracks composing “Over the Summit,” the sound emanated by the Aurora Borealis has been embraced and manipulated for a work of art, melting it with ethers of orchestral fragments escaped by the perennial layers of Permafrost.

Netherworld - Zastrugi

Artist: Netherworld
P: 2015
Abstract and sparse electronics still heavily feature in Tedeschi's sound throughout the five lengthy pieces that make up Zastrugi.  However, while his previous works as Netherworld resulted largely in quiet tones and massive spaces, here there is more than just the inclusion of electronic rhythms.  As a whole, there is a perceptible sense of depth to the album that makes it all the more engaging;  A sense of space and almost architectural like structure to how almost tangible elements of the mix can be. On a piece such as "Sérac," spoken word recordings are mixed with a heavy, deep thudding passage of percussion.  The second half has him mixing in a collage of harsher, noisier sounds that never push the envelope too far, but is a distinctly different, and rawer edge to it than his wind-swept previous work.  The up-front forceful sound also features heavily on "Dry Andes," where an overdriven kick drum thump is pushed loud enough in the mix to almost be painful.  The remainder may be echoing noises, clattering distortion and synth expanses, but it does not emphasize subtlety.  A piece such as "Mapsuk" might not be as harsh as some of the others here, but it also does not stay as minimalist as his previous work was.  Dense, foghorn like bursts of tone appear, then are transformed into sonar-like pings and deep, cavernous beats.  There is a lot of variety throughout, via unidentifiable and broken tones that make up the composition.  Tedeschi buries the punchy kick drum far off in the distance on "Bergie Seltzer," with an oddly created white noise approximation for a snare drum adding additional accents.  The second half is a bit noisier, but in a light and tasteful way.   The concluding "Uikka" has the addition of what sounds like fragmented female vocals with a deep 909 kick.  Something that potentially could be a sampled electric guitar  even appears in the closing minutes to close the album on a harsher and more aggressive note.
The Glacial Movements label has been rekindling the short-lived isolationist sound movement since its inception, and now it seems that Iceberg is going to revive the minimalist techno sound that followed it.  While I would have preferred a greater variation on the rhythms (the ones here stick mostly to the 4/4 kick variety), there is still more than enough diversity on Zastrugi to keep it engaging throughout its entire duration.
