Ian Boddy - The Deep

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1994
The Deep is probably the closest Boddy's ever come to a 'concept' album. He has made no secret of the fact that several of the pieces are heavily influenced by the James Cameron film The Abyss and indeed the opening track which fades in with the sound of a submarine sonar perfectly sets the scene with it's eerie crescendo of voices. There are many orchestral influences on evidence as well with tracks such as In the Realm of Poseidon and Sub-Aquiem lending an air of grandeur to the proceedings. Other tracks such as The Deep, Sirens Call and Re-Emergence add to the overall dark atmosphere of the album although there is a bit of light relief in the shape of Aquanaut and Flow Current Flow.
The opening four tracks were performed to spectacular effect at concerts at The Derby Guildhall and also at the first EMMA Music Festival during 1994.

Ian Boddy - The Uncertainty Principle

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1993
/ 2020
The first album that Boddy produced and mixed entirely in his own studio has been his biggest seller to date. The combinat- tion of sequencing, melodies and spacy atmospheres produced what is one of the classic UK EM albums of the mid-90's and raised Boddy's profile enormously. After the reissue of Jade on Something Else Records, The Uncertainty Principle was the first all new release as well as the first album entirely recorded and mixed in his private studio. This latter fact was especially imortant as it gave Boddy the time to experiment on complex sections of music which could be digitally pasted together to create the cross fading between tracks that he has used on many of his subsequent releases. It also marked a step up in gear from Odyssey and Drive with very enthusiastic reviews in many of the fan magazines and has been his most performed work both live and on the radio.

Ian Boddy - Tone Science

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 2016

LTD 500 Copies

Ian Boddy, DiN label boss, is one of the best known names in UK electronic music. He has been releasing music for over 35 years as well as playing concerts, creating sound design and composing library music. Yet despite this long musical career he still manages to surprise his listeners and Tone Science could represent his most experimental album to date. For this release Boddy has returned to his musical roots where experimentation was the name of the game.  He has always been fascinated by the random qualities of natural phenomena such as streams, waves, the leaves on a tree or the clouds in the sky. Whilst they seem, on the one hand to always be the same, they are in fact constantly changing and their patterns never exactly repeat. With this thought in mind he set about creating soundscapes using controlled random systems that could self generate themselves using his analogue modular gear. The pitches of the notes in each piece were massaged into various musical scales by the use of note quantisers giving each of the tracks a distinct harmonic voice. The composition process was the creation of the patch itself and in fact he didn’t physically play anything at all at the recording stage. What you hear on these five pieces is the result of these complex interactions. Like the natural phenomena he describes above they appear to stay the same yet they never repeat and each has a distinct mood. By restricting his audio palette on this project to only his analogue modular instruments including vintage FX the pieces have a very pure, electronic nature.

With “Tone Science” Boddy proves once again that he never rests in his personal musical journey. There are always new sonic territories to explore and for the adventurous listener this album opens up a whole new world of electronica to enjoy.

Robert Rich + Ian Boddy - React

Artist: Robert Rich & Ian Boddy
P: 2008
DIN 29
LTD 2000 Copies
React is the third collaboration between American ambient pioneer Robert Rich and DiN label boss Ian Boddy. However, unlike their previous two studio outings on the DiN label, Outpost (2001) and Lithosphere (2005), this is a record of their first ever live performance at the Star’s End Radio Show 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert in Philadelphia in June 2007.

The duo forge a fascinating sonic collaboration that allows for glimpses of each other’s musical personalities to be seen within the evolving musical landscape. Boddy is mainly responsible for the rhythmic content which he mutates and morphs from the sonic input of Rich’s MOTM modular system. There are references to a couple of tracks from Outpost (Ice Fields and The Edge of Nowhere) and the title track of Lithosphere but they’re presented in a more energised and dynamic version. Meanwhile Rich paints a tapestry of sound with muted keyboards, flutes and his trademark gliss lap steel guitar voicing.

The music ebbs and flows from abstract soundscapes through gentle reveries to up tempo sections that combine thunderous analogue bass and glitchy percussion overlain with a mesmerising mix of keyboards, flutes and gliss guitar. A truly unique concert performance by two of the most accomplished musicians in modern ambient electronica.
