Ian Boddy - As Above so Below

Ian Boddy, DiN label boss, has never been a musician to rest on his laurels. After the totally analogue, experimental “Tone Science” (DiN49) he now moves onto fresh sonic pastures with his new solo album “As Above So Below”. Boddy has always liked to play around with genres, mixing and matching styles to suit his current frame of mind. On “As Above So Below” he effortlessly combines ambient, classical & electronic music into a seamless, intoxicating sonic landscape. Boddy has been heavily involved in composing library music for many years that feature in TV, films and documentaries and he brings this filmic quality to bear on this suite of six tracks. The title track opens procedures with a great slab of slowly evolving orchestral chords that rise up out of a cold, ethereal atmosphere. Based on Prelude No.1 in C Major by J. S. Bach this awe inspiring opening piece sets the scene for what is to follow. Arpeggiating piano tones, deep Moog basses, ethereal string clusters & analogue sequencers all vie for attention in the following five tracks. The latter are at times light and playful with interlocking layers on tracks such as “Quantum Of Memory” and “The Thaumaturge” whereas an all together darker vibe is created on the deep bass pulses of the brooding track “Shrine”. The final track “One Day” finishes the album off in an emotional manner with rising string melodies above haunting felt piano arpeggios before finally disappearing back into the eerie atmosphere that opened the album. As usual this album will be released in the elegant slimline digipak CD package that followers of DiN will be familiar with. However there will also be a limited edition 180g vinyl album package as well which will include a download code. Both formats will feature a stunning, minimal image by photographic artist Wendy Carroll. Once again DiN have produced a quality release in highly collectable formats for all lovers of modern, ambient electronica.

Ian Boddy - Axiom

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 2020

LTD 500

At the start of 2020 Boddy was asked by the artist Bluetech to contribute a track for an upcoming compilation album (Portals) lovingly curated to reflect the Kosmische music heritage of many of the musicians involved in this project. Boddy’s track “Omicron” with its cascading arpeggios, soaring synth choirs and deep Moog bass proved a heady mixture that was used in the promo video for this release. This got Boddy to thinking that perhaps a full solo studio album in this style would be a creative goal worth pursuing and thus we have the release of “Axiom” (DiN64) as the result of that exercise.
The six tracks on “Axiom” certainly reference Boddy’s musical roots with its pulsating sequencer passages that hark back to the Berlin School sequencing of Tangerine Dream, most especially on the powerhouse track “Nitro”. The self referential track “Boddy Love” is an in joke with a nod to a classic 70’s Klaus Schulze album and features a gorgeous melodic sequence line that steadily grows to a beautiful climax before gently fading into the distance.
Elsewhere “Icon” with its subsonic bass throb and veil of orchestral strings climbs to a sonic summit before crashing down to the sublime and emotional piece “The Fallen”. Closing out the album the title track bookends the albums opener “Omicron” with a slice of Synthwave that has it all from analogue sequences, vintage drum machines and soaring chords for an emotional, joyous journey.

Ian Boddy - Continuum

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1996
This 2CD set is edited from a 7 hour improvised performance Boddy gave in an art gallery during a Comic Art Festival within a sci-fi like setting. Many see this album as the bridge between Boddy's earlier, more melodic styles and the ambient textural approach he developed leading up to the formation of his DiN label in 1999.
The original pressing is now out of print but it has been reissued as a high quality CDr with the original sleeve.

Ian Boddy - Elemental

Artist: Ian Boddy

LTD 1500 Copies

With the release of "Elemental" DiN reaches it's quarter of a century of titles since Boddy's inaugral release "Box of Secrets" in 1999. This is his fourth DiN release with "Chiasmata" in 2004 and "Aurora" in 2002 being the other two. He has also been involved in collaborative projects on eleven other DiN releases working with musicians from diverse backgrounds. These include the American ambient pioneer Robert Rich, Throbbing Gristle member Chris Carter, German virtuoso touch guitarist Markus Reuter and UK synth artist Mark Shreeve. Such a broad range of influences have had a positive effect on Boddy's music and he has absorbed and distilled many of these to startling effect on "Elemental". Indeed this album shows off his chameleon like ability to constantly change and develop over what has now been a long musical career since his first cassette only release way back in 1980!

Furthermore Boddy has also composed several library music albums for DeWolfe Music Limited. These have often been atmospherically themed releases but by their very nature have to be compositionally compact . This has also influenced much of the music on "Elemental" which is certainly Boddy's most structured set of pieces for quite some time. The 8 tracks run in a continuous set merging into each other via ambient cross fades. The first, "Never Forever" and last tracks, "Elemental" have a grandiose, chordal character that nicely bookend the album. Four of the other tracks are strongly rhythmic and include hefty bass lines and intricate percussion overlaid with beguiling and subtle melodic themes. The remaining two tracks are in a more atmospheric, ambient vein and provide aural resting points in what feels like a musical journey. However "Elemental" doesn't have a spacey feel as found on his last two releases but exudes a more organic, down to earth approach.

Ian Boddy - Nevermore

LTD 500

It seems only fitting that this release comes from DiN label boss Ian Boddy. Performed live at DiN HQ the performance was videoed and streamed on March 27th 2021 as part of the three day Soundquest Festival. This was organised by ambient luminary Steve Roach and had an audience watching and listening of 1000+ music fans across the globe coming together in these strange days of a global pandemic. This surely inspired Boddy to conjure up a mesmerising tour de force of a live show that shows all his skills and experience built up over a life time of performing..
Boddy’s set up was centred around his large Serge modular system supplemented by three cases of Eurorack. Eschewing the presence of a laptop this allowed him to sculpt and evolve a series of engaging electronic soundscapes. Ranging from the spacey and eerie to beautifully pastoral with his Ondes Martenot style French Connection keyboard featured at several points with its hauntingly beautiful tones. Novation & Moog keyboards fill out Boddy’s arsenal of instruments and the video shows him in constant motion playing, tweaking and sculpting the hour long set. In the two rhythmic excursions “From Here To There” and “Nevermore” one can literally hear Boddy build the complex, intertwining patterns brick by brick before launching out with some inspired solo playing that can only really happen in a live performance..
Released in a limited edition digipak with beautiful artwork by Wendy Carroll this is music that not only celebrates the work of one of the UK’s leading exponents of electronic music but also the label he has curated with such love and care for the last 22 years.

Ian Boddy - Odyssey

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1989
This album heralds from 1989 and if memory serves was Ian’s first ever CD release. It marked the start of his mid period, finishing with the classic ‘Uncertainty Principle’ and ‘the Deep’. Unlike those albums however this one has never seen a re-release so of all the post ‘Climb’ recordings it is by far the rarest. But what of the music? Well you can’t beat a good old crashing sound to start an album and boy does the opening of ‘Hyperion’ crash! Then, in marked contrast, we get some lovely floating, soothing pads with little tinkling effects. A gorgeous plucked string melody takes us forward. Things become even more beautiful as we progress. A melancholy melody soars into the heights in uplifting Vangelis fashion. This in turn is replaced by plucked strings and then an almost John Dyson style lead line. ‘A Time Remembered’ is just as beautifully as its predecessor with acoustic guitar and flutey synth over exquisite synth washes.
‘Amazonia’ starts with appropriate rainforest type effects, ethnic flute and percussion. The pace picks up with a gamelan lead line then more flutey synth. Just after the half way mark it is all change with a sort of medieval rhythm that reminded me a little of one of the tracks off ‘Phoenix’. Very infectious and joyous stuff. ‘Masquerade’ provides us with more acoustic guitar and layer after layer of excellent melodies, which continue through, to ‘Lammergeyer’ that has a feel not too dissimilar to the earlier ethnic tinged ‘Amazonia’. Things take a darker and almost film music turn with the title track. Ethereal pads mix with orchestral and organ sounds to give a large epic feel. ‘Chameleon’ is a much more conventionally rhythmic affair, slowly winding up the pace until we are belting along, lead lines flying over the top. Ideal for air keyboard playing. It has to be said that this is Ian’s most tuneful and quite frankly undemanding album taking his earlier style and adding ethnic and even chamber music influences. It is the antitheses to what he was later to produce on his own DiN label. (DL)

A 30 year retrospective of the music of Ian BoddyThey say a journey begins with a single step. Ian Boddy's journey began in 1979 when he walked into the studio at Newcastle's Spectro Arts Workshop. Intrigued by the sounds emanating from the banks of VCS3 synthesisers and Revox tape recorders, he started a 30 year odyssey of musical experimentation and adventure. Never following the mainstream or courting a band-centric musical path he has nevertheless forged a truly unique musical career. From the release of his first ever full album on the UK cassette label Mirage in 1980, he has gone on to issue 23 solo & 24 collaborative albums, performed over 100 concerts in the UK, The Netherlands, Germany & USA, composed 11 library music albums for DeWolfe Music and programmed several sample CD's & virtual instruments.  In 1999 he founded the DiN electronica label which has since become synonymous with adventurous and eclectic music. There have been 35 titles to date, including albums by Chris Carter, Robert Rich, Tetsu Inoue, Mark Shreeve, Markus Reuter & Erik Wøllo. Boddy's influence also extends into sound design where numerous musicians and film makers have used his sounds in their own music and soundtracks. He has over 300 library music tracks released via DeWolfe Music which are used worldwide on a huge variety of TV shows, documentaries and films.
These statistics are impressive enough however what impresses the most is Boddy's sheer determination and presence of mind to follow his own musical path and create music and sounds that offer a very personal reflection of his own personality. Pearl is the 36th release on DiN and offers a retrospective of Boddy's 30 year journey. Released in a limited edition of 1,000 (with the first 300 being signed & numbered by the artist) , beautifully designed digipak format the music is split across two discs. "Outer DiN" attempts to bring together all his work outside of DiN. It includes his solo work stretching all the way back to the early cassette releases, three DeWolfe library music tracks and an excerpt of his sound design work. "Inner DiN" showcases both his solo and collaborative work on the DiN ambient label. Boddy has mixed both CDs into a continuous mix of music that provides a fascinating and unique way to experience the music of a truly original musician.

Ian Boddy - Phoenix

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1985 / 1996
This is a re-issue of his third vinyl album and is the last to make its way onto CD. As with the other CD re-issues we have a superb bonus track not available on the original. Depending on who you talk to 'Phoenix' has the reputation of being either the best or worst of Ian's early releases.
The title track starts with a lush bank of synths underpined by some great church organ. Drums come in after a couple of minutes and the main theme makes itself heard, creating a very strong melody that chugs along with the rhythm.
The second track again starts with that great organ sound, a lovely tinkling melody follows and a female voice (not singing) adds some colour. The melody takes turns with the female vocal to be the lead.
'Your Eyes' initially comprises of a metallic piano sound and saxophone that weave yet more superb melodies that I found myself humming whilst writing this, the pace quickens as the drums are introduced, we have a short pause for breath and then things take off at break neck speed again.
'Gavotte' (which I think was an ancient dance) is the real fun piece on the album. Superb rhythm and male vocal stabs provide structure for the playful lead line. Yes, you could dance to it but I'm sure you wouldn't retain your liberty for too long.
The final track on the original album was called 'The Necromancer'. It starts off in suitably dark brooding fashion, the chief wizard enters, the pace quickens and everyone in the vicinity takes cover. The melody could very well represent spells being cast as it has a rather mysterious and very slightly Eastern feel. The track slows down again and a tranquil mood is created with washes of synth before the rhythm returns and takes the track to its close.
The bonus track 'The Purcell Set (Parts 1-4)' was recorded live at The Purcell Rooms, Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1986. Being contemporary with 'Phoenix', it fits in with the mood of the album perfectly. An underwater sonar type sound is joined by ghostly bells and sonic shimmers as a slow sequence adds to the atmosphere accompanied by one melody after another. Everything fades away and more synth washes help to clear the mind and relaxation deepens as a piano can be heard low in the mix. A few minutes it's all change again and we are introduced to a moderately fast piece to close.

Ian Boddy - Slide

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 2008

LTD 1500 Copies
Slide is the studio album follow-up to Elemental (DiN25) and is the sixteenth full solo CD release by DiN label boss Ian Boddy. Musically it is split between three beautifully expressive legato pieces and six up-tempo tracks which employ Boddy's trademark inventive rhythms with soaring, expressive synth voices.

Although Boddy has a well known love of vintage analogue synths he's never made a big deal of whatever gear he's used on a particular project as it's always been the music on each release that has governed what audio tools he's employed. However Slide is dominated by the sound and playing techniques Boddy has coaxed from a new musical instrument he aquired in 2008. This is a modern analogue version of the keyboard employed by the Ondes Martenot (invented in the 1920's) which utilises a wire and ring pulley system sitting in front of a keyboard via which the player can smoothly glide between notes and create natural vibrato. Furthermore a rocker switch on the left of the keyboard allows for the natural and subtle control of the articulation of each note. This instrument breathes new life into playing a synthesiser and allows for an incredibly expressive performance. In combination with Boddy's large modular analogue synth a series of beautiful, expressive tones emerge that are arranged over nine pieces. Indeed analogue sounds dominate throughout the album lending a gorgeously lush, warm sound to the tracks.

Thus even after a musical career spanning 28 years Boddy still has the ability to discover new ways of expressing himself and producing an album that will delight and surprise with it's musical inventiveness.

Ian Boddy - Spirits

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1985/ 2006
Released in 1985, Spirits is the transitional record in Ian Boddy's catalog. Indeed, its five tracks are split neatly down the middle, with the first half of the album continuing with the synth pop sounds of some of his earlier records -- the Ultravox-like "Living in a Ritual" even has vocals, a rare occurrence in Boddy's musical world -- while the two lengthy tracks on the latter half of the album, "Spirits" and the almost Gregorian-sounding "Lamalode", prefigure the ambient electronica that would be his primary focus from this point forward.
The album's pivot point, "The Sentinel", splits the difference; more tightly structured and with a somewhat harsher edge to its synthesizer settings than the floaty tunes that followed, it recalls the progressive synth rock that Richard Pinhas and Heldon began exploring in the mid-'70s. Although the occasionally tinny mid-'80s sound dates Spirits rather firmly in its time and place, it's still an appealing, sometimes gripping listen.
Second vinyl release also reissued on SER in 1995. The title track was premiered at the first UK Electronica, Milton Keynes in 1983. Featuring the rock drumming of Ian McCormack and vocals of Brian Ross.
The original pressing is now out of print but it has been reissued as a high quality CDr with the original sleeve.

Ian Boddy - The Deep

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1994
The Deep is probably the closest Boddy's ever come to a 'concept' album. He has made no secret of the fact that several of the pieces are heavily influenced by the James Cameron film The Abyss and indeed the opening track which fades in with the sound of a submarine sonar perfectly sets the scene with it's eerie crescendo of voices. There are many orchestral influences on evidence as well with tracks such as In the Realm of Poseidon and Sub-Aquiem lending an air of grandeur to the proceedings. Other tracks such as The Deep, Sirens Call and Re-Emergence add to the overall dark atmosphere of the album although there is a bit of light relief in the shape of Aquanaut and Flow Current Flow.
The opening four tracks were performed to spectacular effect at concerts at The Derby Guildhall and also at the first EMMA Music Festival during 1994.

Ian Boddy - The Uncertainty Principle

Artist: Ian Boddy

/ 2020
The first album that Boddy produced and mixed entirely in his own studio has been his biggest seller to date. The combinat- tion of sequencing, melodies and spacy atmospheres produced what is one of the classic UK EM albums of the mid-90's and raised Boddy's profile enormously. After the reissue of Jade on Something Else Records, The Uncertainty Principle was the first all new release as well as the first album entirely recorded and mixed in his private studio. This latter fact was especially imortant as it gave Boddy the time to experiment on complex sections of music which could be digitally pasted together to create the cross fading between tracks that he has used on many of his subsequent releases. It also marked a step up in gear from Odyssey and Drive with very enthusiastic reviews in many of the fan magazines and has been his most performed work both live and on the radio.

Ian Boddy - Tone Science

Ian Boddy, DiN label boss, is one of the best known names in UK electronic music. He has been releasing music for over 35 years as well as playing concerts, creating sound design and composing library music. Yet despite this long musical career he still manages to surprise his listeners and Tone Science could represent his most experimental album to date. For this release Boddy has returned to his musical roots where experimentation was the name of the game.  He has always been fascinated by the random qualities of natural phenomena such as streams, waves, the leaves on a tree or the clouds in the sky. Whilst they seem, on the one hand to always be the same, they are in fact constantly changing and their patterns never exactly repeat. With this thought in mind he set about creating soundscapes using controlled random systems that could self generate themselves using his analogue modular gear. The pitches of the notes in each piece were massaged into various musical scales by the use of note quantisers giving each of the tracks a distinct harmonic voice. The composition process was the creation of the patch itself and in fact he didn’t physically play anything at all at the recording stage. What you hear on these five pieces is the result of these complex interactions. Like the natural phenomena he describes above they appear to stay the same yet they never repeat and each has a distinct mood. By restricting his audio palette on this project to only his analogue modular instruments including vintage FX the pieces have a very pure, electronic nature.

With “Tone Science” Boddy proves once again that he never rests in his personal musical journey. There are always new sonic territories to explore and for the adventurous listener this album opens up a whole new world of electronica to enjoy.
