Jarre, Jean Michel

Jarre, Jean Michel

Pioneer of one of the fastest growing trends in the industry today: electronic music, composer Jean Michel Jarre elevated the genre to new peaks of popularity as early as the late 70’s and 80’s with 60 million albums sold world-wide, to date. Emerging as an innovative international superstar, he creates a new format of out-door concert performance that has contributed to break the ground for a new generation of out-door rock concerts. In 1976, he hits the top of the charts worldwide with breakthrough album Oxygene (Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros in France). This international success in French record history remains unequalled today with sales in the region of 12 million.

Jean Michel Jarre - Images (Best of)

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 2002

This compilation spans across 7 studio albums and 1 live recording made during the period of 1976-1991. Obviously, it's next to impossible to pick a dozen of "best of" tracks from that much material, so that everyone would agree upon the choice. However, "Images" does a nearly perfect job of giving a taste of each of Jarre's albums made in the first 15 years of his working, presenting a couple of tracks off each of them. As such, it is a good place to start getting into Jarre's music, and a good compilation to choose which album is worth buying. Jarre's music is normally meant to be listened to for the duration of the whole album. This fact shows these individual pieces' compositional strength, as they stand quite good on their own, being separated from their respective album's concept.
The compilation also includes 3 previously unreleased tracks. Normally I hate such inclusions, because, frankly, they are nothing more than an attractor to force people who already own every studio album to buy the compilation. Also, such tracks are normally sub par to the "best of" material. But with "Images" these new pieces don't fall out of context. Especially "Globe Trotter" is good, with its cautios staccatto synths and a chilling melody.
With its drawbacks, "Images" is a very good compilation. If you're hesitant where to start with Jean-Michel Jarre, you are advised to buy it.

Jean Michel Jarre - Live

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1989
Jarre Live is an album that is probably the only momento left of one of the most bizarrist episodes in British Pop culture. As to the photograph of Jean Michel in the sleeve notes of Jarre Live, and for any other Jarrists out there who might be interested, the instrument that Jarre is playing and to all intents and purposes looks like a klavierchord-guitar, is actually called the "LAG Insect". The microphone coming of it is a vocoder inserted inside the main body of the instrument, which along with the keys is made from wood. Nearly 1 million Londoners that had read about the build up for over a year were waiting to see what "That Concert" was all about, 170,000 tickets had already been sold.

Jean Michel Jarre - Magnetic Fields

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1981
The five tracks together push a great symphony out of Jarre's mechanic keys. The record starts off with a catching ambient noise continuing thru the next 7 minutes of the track. Samples are laid on the main sample, small rhytmns, beats and breaks do the harmonic background of this track. The track continues into more spacey and harmonic tunes used to make a more-than-ever exploring mood, but in the end, it transforms itself into another part of the track filled up by a wave. The track ends with a saxophone-sample. Next starts with a clapping beat, which then transforms into another harmonic groove. Sounds of clocks and trains fill the passage between the second and third track, where the sounds of clocks takes over. The samples are still laid on the third track, where the volume of the third track slows down and the fourth track comes in with a haunting keyboard sample. Beats and bass are laid on, and another harmonic groove begins. Sounds of busses and trains fill the end of the track, where the Last Rhumba take over, with a great dancing tune, made for you and your dancy soul.

Jean Michel Jarre - Metamorphoses

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 2000
This very interesting and versatile work was a long-awaited product that was largely influenced by transition that JMJ music underwent in the late 90s. Metamorphoses demonstrates a somewhat different approach to creating subtle electronic textures permeated by wittily designed and sequenced melodic grooves. You will not hear JMJ from late 80 and 90, instead, you will be submerged into an undemanding world of groovy chill out, ambient soundscapes, and memorable melodies.
