Jarre, Jean Michel

Pioneer of one of the fastest growing trends in the industry today: electronic music, composer Jean Michel Jarre elevated the genre to new peaks of popularity as early as the late 70’s and 80’s with 60 million albums sold world-wide, to date. Emerging as an innovative international superstar, he creates a new format of out-door concert performance that has contributed to break the ground for a new generation of out-door rock concerts. In 1976, he hits the top of the charts worldwide with breakthrough album Oxygene (Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros in France). This international success in French record history remains unequalled today with sales in the region of 12 million.

Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene Trilogy (3 CD Set)

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1997/ 2007 / 2016
Here the original 3 albums in one set.

On Friday (Sept. 30), Jarre announced his forthcoming LP, Oxygene 3, which will serve as the third and final installment in his Oxygene trilogy. Scheduled for release Dec. 2, it arrives nearly 40 years to the day of the release of Jarre’s breakthrough 1976 album Oxygene. (The second installment, Oxygene 7-13, came out in 1997.) Oxygene 3 will contain seven new and original tracks titled Parts 14-20.

Jarre states in a press release that during the making of Electronica, he created a track -- now “Oxygene Part 19” -- that provided the fuel for the new album: “[It] made me think about what Oxygene could be if I was composing it today.” However, he states that the new album isn’t a remake, but rather a new chapter.

Jean Michel Jarre - Planet Jarre (2CD + 2 MC Box Set)

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 2018

The consecutive numbered Deluxe Fan Box feat all 41 Tracks on 2-CD Deluxe Digipack Edition plus all 41 Track on 2 cassette tapes and a download card to access the complete album as a high quality WAV-File download plus 12 tracks mixed in 5.1.
This new set features 41 works “hand-picked” by Jarre himself and re-mastered to deliver what the label describes as “a new and sparkling freshness to the sound of the package”.

Jarre has divided the audio offering into four different sections and he explains the methodology: “Going through the body of my existing work for this project, I realised that I have four quite different styles of composition. There is this common idea that people are focusing on shorter and shorter moments of music by zapping constantly. This is not necessarily true. We are also spending more and more time in our day-to-day life listening to playlists. Wherever we are and whatever we do. This is the reason why I decided to divide this project into four different parts, four different worlds that make up my own world…my own planet. And I hope that you will enjoy the journey.”

The four parts are: Soundscapes, Themes, Sequences, Explorations & Early Works. Sequences features two new tracks: Coachella Opening and Herbalizer. The last disc features the previously unreleased demo recording of Music For Supermarkets, Jarre’s 1983 project which saw him press one copy of the album for auction before ordering the master tapes to be destroyed. Erosmachine from the same disc dates from 1969.

Jean Michel Jarre - Rendez-Vous

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1986
Rendez-vous has it all: Swirling instrumental backdrops like those found in the early Jarre albums, a few bouncy melodies like in the later ones, and most importantly COHESION between the two which many of his releases don't have. Opening with a dramatic piece that rams an image of space vistas into your head, the tone is epic and relaxed. Before you get yourself too lazy though, Second Rendez-vous shoots you right between the eyes with its dramatic three-part ten minute score. Punctuated in the middle by Jarre's laser harp dancing, it finishes by reaching a climax and then filtering away into the night.Third Rendez-vous shows off the laser harp as a wonderful solo instrument. Why more artists don't use this thing is anyone's guess! Fourth-Rendezvous is quite frankly the piece that got me infected with Jarreitus. Although better when performed live complete with light show and fireworks, it's still a fine toe-tapping piece to listen to in any guise (yes, even Rendez-vous '98...), although as many have said, it feels somewhat out of place sandwiched between Third Rendez-vous and Fifth Rendez-vous. Fifth Rendez-vous is a return to a more 'calmer' piece where if you listen carefully, you'll hear fragments of previous tracks. Of course, Final Rendez-vous is a triumph. Both saddening but at the same time full of the idea of space, the album bows out on a high. Easily one of Jarre's greatest works it's well worth having. The continued inclusion of both Second Rendez-vous and Fourth-Rendezvous in Jean Michel's live concerts are testament to the album's greatness.

Jean Michel Jarre - Revolutions

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1988/ 1997
The gradual working in of motifs in the first four tracks, essentially just four parts of the one concept. This level of adding layers is the sort of thing you'd think would be preserved for classical music and the use of motif in particular is something that you normally associate with soundtrack music. The differing feels within the album on the various tracks. Within a single disc Jarre has gone to different places and it all hangs together as a piece of work which is an achievement in itself. Jarre wears his heart on his sleeve. There are a number of dedications on this album championing various causes both specific and non specific. Having worked himself a comfortable niche within which to operate Jarre could have just gone along putting out more of the same and not offering anything of himself. But here we get a glimpse of what makes this artist passionate and that makes for a more inclusive and impressive experience. Electronic tunes at their best. Listen to this and chill.

Jean Michel Jarre - The Essential

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 2004
The Essential Jean Michel Jarre’s 16 tracks cover all phases of this master’s 30-plus year career. The songs pass effortlessly from the breezy techno-pop of opener "Oxygene Part 4," from Oxygene to the deep ambience and layered samples of "Souvenir de Chine/Souvenir Of China," from 1982’s Les Concerts En Chine. The standout track from Metamorphoses, "C’est La Vie," (featuring Natacha Atlas) is a dub expedition for the darker side of the dance floor. Meanwhile, Zoolook’s "Ethnicolor 1" and Oxygene’s "Oxygene Part 6" aim for the head instead of the feet with oceanic ambient wooshes and soothing minor-key melodies. Listening to this collection, one is able to truly understand the emotional power and technical ingenuity behind Jarre’s work.

Jean Michel Jarre - The Symphonic Jean Michel Jarre

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 2001
From the opening notes this is a journey into sonic landscapes that only the legendary JMJ can create. Only this time, these tracks have a more "organic" feel about them as they are performed by a symphony orchestra. If you have every JMJ CD, this is easily in the top 3 if not number 1 overall. It is that good. You cannot recommend this any higher. If you are a fan of beautiful music, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD. It is simply outstanding. Once you have heard this CD you will yearn for more.

Jean Michel Jarre - Waiting for Cousteau

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1990
Waiting for Cousteau is one of those rare tracks that can be classed as pure ambient. So much more emotion than a Brian Eno ambient recording, Waiting for Cousteau is an epic. The track slowly builds adding very subtle layers of water and voices with the the slightest hint of melody just barley visible. You will love it's sadness and simplicity. The Calypso's are more standard Jarre fair with part 2 standing out as a favorite. However, the real attraction is 45 minutes long masterpiece here. It's not just noise - there's so much more going on than that. The piano is not random, I mean go listen to an early Tangerine Dream album - pure white noise ! Waiting for Cousteau is Jarre's first pure ambient track and it stands miles higher than anything else - it's wonderful music and absolutely timeless.

Jean Michel Jarre - Zoolook

Artist: Jean Michel Jarre
P: 1984/ 2004
There are some truly groundbreaking electronic albums out there and Zoolook is one of them. JMJ's first abums, Oxygene and Equinoxe are excellent. His 3rd album, Magnetic Fields has some great tracks but does not have the same impact. Perhaps realising this, JMJ set upon a new path. Zoolook is the result. Often an artist ventures in a new direction and looses himself in the process. This is not the case with Zoolook. Jarre sampled recordings of idiginious voices from many countries into his Fairlight CMI,then processed them, turning them into alien sounding instruments. Zoolook is not some arty farty attempt at creativity. The emotional responses this album engenders is the same nowdays as it was in 1984, the music and production was and is ahead of its time. Zoolook, Oxygene and Equinoxe are JMJ's greatest creations. Zoolook is completely different from his previous and later work. Zoolook is one of the most original albums ever made. Both 'Blah Blah Cafe' and 'Diva' popped up on the previous year's 'Music for Supermarkets', and the latter is presented here with Laurie Anderson performing vocal sounds. The former is again reminiscent of Talking Heads, although it doesn't really go anywhere and suffers as a result ('Diva' has a similar problem; there are two parts, but they don't progress). 'Ethnicolor' is, in contrast, a sombre dirge dotted with random sampled speech, which turns into a quasi-rock number at the end. It's the album's high point and starts off with a particularly memorable screeching noise. As far as I am concerned it's the best of Jarre's prog-esque multi-part longer pieces, quieter and sadder than 'Rendezvous II' from his next album. 'Woolloomooloo' and 'Ethnicolor II' are what would now be called ambient, although only the latter really works, its mixture of found sounds and mournful sampled cellos acting as the perfect finale. The album itself sold poorly and Jarre turned his back on this kind of this; his next release, 'Rendezvous', was slick electronic pop music with an entertainingly Wagnerian symphony taking up most of side one. 'Zoolook' is an aquired taste, and Jarre was clearly never going to be held in the same esteem as Eno or Boulez, but it remains fascinating today, a little relic of early sampling.

Tangerine Dream - Revolution of Sound (extended Version) (DVD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2018

Movie about the history of Tangerine Dream from 2017
Extras: Concert London 2007 and Lissabon 2010
Interviews with Johannes Schmölling, Jean Michel Jarre, Michal Mann, Linda Spa, Biance Froese-Acquaye und Margarete Kreuzer
