Yanni - Ethnicity

Artist: Yanni
P: 2003
Ethnicity finds Yanni exploring familiar thematic territory (diversity + harmony = international brotherhood) in search of fresh musical ideas. The result is career recording No. 13 (minus all those redundant compilations), which is likable though maybe a star shy of exceptional. While ethnicity is the theme, the prevailing sound is contemporary and attractively rhythmic with modest world music and classical accents. Notable are Yanni's extensive use of female voices (heard on 10 of the 12 tracks; two selections, in fact, feature straightforward lyrics) and the disc's vivid, sparkling production. Yanni offers an assortment of moods, from the celebratory, planetary-choir sound (think Adiemus) on "Rites of Passage" to pulsing, Deep Forest-like tribal chants, which sometimes click ("Tribal Dream") and sometimes seem forced, a little Yanni-come-lately ("Never Too Late"). High points are the didgeridoo-driven "Rainmaker" and the ethereal "At First Sight." Overall, the disc's sound tilts more toward the heroic than the romantic (a good trend), though some pieces (particularly his mini-operettas) seem overly polite and a little starched. Even so, Ethnicity is a compelling effort that indicates Yanni is, happily, keeping in touch with his more adventurous musical instincts.

Yanni - If I Could Tell You

Artist: Yanni
P: 2000

This album overall is one of the best ones I've heard of Yanni. It is very beautiful and relaxing but of course not as grand or explosive as Yanni's previous works but it is a very acceptable Yanni work and very enjoyable.Changes are good and Yanni did do a lovely change. It takes a while to fully appreciate the cd at first since it does possess a new Yanni sound but once you get used to it, it is a treat for the ears. It is a lovely change in style. For Yanni fans, you are in for a relaxing treat. Personally, I have no problem of the cd, it is just a splendid gift for me. Upon first hearing this cd, I was moved emotionally, I have no regrets on getting the album. I just love, LOVE this cd! If this cd is just not what you expected and wanted more of an orchestra, think of the album as the trough of a wave, Yanni is regenerating his energy for later, maybe in his next release we'll hear the strong, forceful heavy live sounds of Yanni again, but this album is just a lovely surprise, wonderful elegant music.I realize now in what way Yanni is going in his music. I recommend it for any Yanni fan out there.

Yanni - In Celebration of Life

Artist: Yanni
P: 1991

This album summarizes the more "active" part in Yanni's music. Of course, it means that some of the best songs in this album are "rocket-fueled", as true to Yanni's distinctive early sounds. It contains his true masterpieces, such as "Santorini", which is my favorite, "Keys to Imagination", and "Within Attraction", just to mention some. This is one of the best Yanni CD's and if you are into new age music, this album will be the core of your whole collection.

Yanni - In My Time

Artist: Yanni
P: 1993

What can I say about Yanni. His music is the ultimate in relaxation! 'In My Time' is my all-time favorite Yanni cd! Pure and emotionally provoking music that leaves you soothed and relaxed. The difference in this cd, compared to his others, is the piano focus that Yanni uses. Most of his other works are more synthesizer oriented. Don't get me wrong...those works are beautiful, but there is just something about his piano based compositions that really strike me. Very poignant. (I love solo piano anyway). I just think this really showcases Yanni's multitalented ability. As with all his music, Yanni composed and produced every song. He is accompanied on this cd w/ a variety of instrumentality.... acoustic violins, cello, bass, keyboards and percussion. Interestingly, each songs title really fits the mood of the song. You can "feel" the emotion that went into the writing and playing of these compositions. In my opinion, this is Yanni's best work.
We all know he certainly has a reputation for the more systhesizer oriented music, but if that's not your thing, then you'll be very pleasantly surprised with the piano based, 'In My Time.' Great to work, study or chill out with. I promise, you won't regret purchasing this cd. It is truly beautiful music.

Yanni - Keys to Imagination

Artist: Yanni
P: 1986

Yanni's 1986 debut release for Private Music remains one of his most striking works. Created in the vinyl era and thus clocking in at a modest 39 minutes, Keys to Imagination nevertheless captures some of Yanni's most expansive, chest-thumping efforts. While some of the electronic voicings used here are beginning to sound faintly dated, Yanni brings his own brand of propulsive, classical-edged thunder to the familiar prog-rock tactic of tension followed by release. The slow-building, Middle Eastern-flavored title track, for instance, circles overhead like a mysterious raven while you explore a deep, narrow desert canyon. In a flash, a torrent of sound roars through the chasm and sweeps you away in a flood of sonic fury.
