David Wright - Beyond the Airwaves Vol. 2

Artist: David Wright
P: 2015

Volume 2 of David Wright’s ‘Beyond the Airwaves’ trilogy continues where Volume 1 left off, presenting a variety of electronic, ambient, space rock music styles, this time with guests Robert Fox on synths, Lee Morant on guitar and the voice of Carys.
The 35 minute ‘Dreaming Desire’ features Carys on vocals and is a beautifully emotive and slow building epic that came out of an improvised studio session with Robert Fox in 2014. ‘Return to the Plains’ is a live reworking of sections from the ever popular ‘Moments In Time’ album, here reimagined to stunning effect. This 25 minute epic builds with with strong rhythms, sequences and ethnic flavours, underpinned by a multitude of layers and lush passages that make it rich with drama. As with Volume 1, the live sections are taken from live concerts in the USA and Europe in 2012 and 2013, all reworked and added to afterwards in the studio. There are 2 bonus tracks: “Call to Me” which is a chill out track written by Carys and David Wright, plus a Chill Out Remix of  “Walking with Ghosts”. ‘Beyond the Airwaves Volume 2’ is another pulsating voyage into cosmic electronic music and a worthy addition to David Wright’s extensive catalogue.

David Wright - Beyond the Airwaves Vol. 3

Artist: David Wright
P: 2020

Volume 3 completes David Wright’s ‘Beyond the Airwaves’ trilogy and presents a cosmic, spacey synth-rock style journey through electronic tones featuring the guitars of the late Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock and Code Indigo guitarist Andy Lobban.
‘Beyond the Airwaves Volume 3’ is a voyage into pulsating, rhythmic and cosmic electronic music and a worthy addition to David Wright’s extensive catalogue.
The album opens with the album version of “CastleRigg”, its ethereal opening atmospheres giving way to driving hypnotic rhythms and sequences. ‘Citadel’ is a 30 minutes slice of EM that evolves from gentle ambient vistas into pulsating rhythms, sequences and flowing mellotrons, pads and synth leads, all embellished by the guitars of Andy Lobban and Klaus ‘Cosmic’ Hoffmann-Hoock. ‘The Presence of Motion’ is a major revision of an older live track, expanded upon by David with added sequences & rhythms. This very spaced out piece also serves as the perfect showcase for the wonderful cosmic guitar of the late, great Klaus ‘Cosmic’ Hoffmann-Hoock. ‘Beyond the Airwaves Volume 3’ is a voyage into pulsating, rhythmic and cosmic electronic music and a worthy addition to David Wright’s extensive catalogue.

David Wright - Deeper

Artist: David Wright
P: 2005

Deeper is a studio album from David Wright in 2005 and finds the artist at the peak of his creative progress. Deeper is an imaginative, journey style offering with a strong sense of emotion and warmth pervading the album. There are strong themes, poignant melodies and lush orchestrations, all laced with atmospherics and underpinned with gentle percussion and sequences.
Stylistically, the album is closer to his classic ‘Walking with Ghosts” than the 2004 release “Continuum”, but Deeper is a much more evocative and symphonic album than any of his previous outings. Indeed, Deeper is probably the most ‘complete’ David Wright album too date, showing the maturity of an artist at total ease with his music.
Deeper is a “Must have” for existing DW fans and will find favour with those who enjoy high quality melodic electronic music.

David Wright - Dreams and Distant Moonlight

Artist: David Wright
P: 2008

David continues to produce music of a high standard and this epic new studio album is no exception and may well be regarded as one of his finest works. Fifteen interlinked tracks spanning a colossal 77 minutes of music that is stylistically a cross between "Walking With Ghosts" and "Continuum". The album features Andy Lobban and Nigel Turner- Heffer on lead and bass guitars respectively and there are also some vocal textures that will no doubt draw comparison with Code Indigo. However, this is a very definite and very classy David Wright album.
There is some gorgeous piano, particularly on the track "Dreams", lots of trademark synth solos plus inventive rhythms and sequences on "Just an Illusion" and "State of Confusion" while David's string arrangements have never been more inspired on "Cry to the Moon" and "The Canyon". Other tracks like "State of Bliss" with its evocative guitar and stunning blues arrangement, the sparse "Heatwave in Blue" and the Klaus Schulze inspired "Amorphous" highlight that David is prepared to take risks. He is also able to multitask and present different styles on an album, remain cohesive and not deviate from what people recognize as his core emotive style. Huge in scope and recalling previous epics like Cassini and Sea of Dreams this new album will be a real treat for fans old and new.

David Wright - Fade

Artist: David Wright
P: 2024

“It is a wondrous thing to be able to remove oneself from reality and create music. To journey to a universe of your own creation where not even you, as it’s author, can recall what transpired. Or to know how you achieved what you accomplished or have even the slightest recollection of the journey. Your only memory is, the music”. © David Wright 2024

‘Fade’ is a musical odyssey blending all the elements we have come to know and love in David Wright’s music. The result is an album that drifts between the waves of gentle ambience and the dynamism of pulsating sequences. Gentle passages caress the listener, then strong rhythmic passages tease with a wonderful and evolving combination of styles peppered by a gorgeous array of synths, gentle pads and effects. But more than anything, ‘Fade’ is an album of emotional reflection channeling David’s many influences.
The short and rhythmic ‘Android Caravan’ opens the album before the 3 suites; ‘Shadows’, ‘Sleeper at the Gates of Dawn’ and ‘Transmission Red’ take us on a cosmic journey through classic electronic music styles. There are echoes of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze here, yes, even a nod to Pink Floyd. But this is very much a ‘David Wright’ album, with his delicate and evocative sensibilities and style very much to the fore.
Nothing is rushed; gentle and evolving intros laced with mysterious beauty highlight the three longer tracks, which are broken down into shorter segments to give 14 tracks in total. Haunting passages are intertwined with hypnotic and evolving sequences that move between gentle rhythmic motion and powerful sequences and rhythms.
‘Fade’ incorporates all the best elements of David Wright’s thematic new age and electronic space music. An album that will appeal to fans old and new.

David Wright - In Search of Silence

Artist: David Wright
P: 2011

David's 24th opus is an epic journey reflecting the ebb and flow of life, encapsulated in a diverse and coherent collection of musical soundscapes. In keeping with his very best journey style albums (think "Dreams and Distant Moonlight"), "In Search of Silence" offers a roller-coaster ride of emotions and styles. From the ethereal to the atmospheric, from the melotron and sequencer dominated rhythmic to lounge chill out and ambient, David Wright really has pulled out all the stops on this one to present a stunning, expertly crafted 78 minute mammoth masterpiece.

This has been a fun album to do, not least because I've been rediscovering a lot of sounds from my hardware synths and relying less on the soft synths - not that there's anything wrong with the soft synths - they're still in evidence on the new album, but it is dominated by hardware synths this time round, including the Kurzweil PC3x, JP8000, JD990 and Karma Even my old 01W, 05rW and K4 had the cobwebs blown off them and used.
Musically I think this new album is a departure from recent works, I'd say that some of the music is structured in the same linear way I approached "Walking with Ghosts", but does include some improvised and drifting segments circa "Momentum".
I think it's probably fair to say that I've been less concerned about the "technical" this time during the writing and recording process and concentrated more on being spontaneous and creative.
