Dream Journey” is a collection of pieces created in a Berlin School style using sounds and instruments evocative of the 70’s. The way these pieces have been produced is also quite different from my previous albums. Taking inspiration from the acquisition of a new synthesiser instrument the “Odyssey” by Behringer, a faithful recreation of the legendary ARP Odyssey, the jump off point was the hands on tactile nature of its original workflow. Creating strange sci-fi sounds with the movement of its sliders.
This led me into experimenting with how far I could push creating live improvised tracks as one shot recordings. Utilising all my hardware gear plus a range of software instruments I recorded a number of pieces using this approach.
This is live, raw material, and it is presented with its imperfections left in place; as for me it captures moments within the journeys I took creating these pieces. I did make edits, though this was more cutting parts out that I felt distracted from the overall flow, and these were fairly minor.
There are no overdubs or extra tracks added to finesse the recorded performances.
The exceptions to this are tracks 1 & 2, which were created in passes. Track 2 was two live takes, one recorded as an overdub of track 1, both using the Odyssey. Track 1 was three passes, again single pass overdubs recorded over the previous part. I used the Odyssey and Roland System 1 for this track.
The work is meditative and psychedelic in its overall mood, running to over 2 hours. When creating this type of material my mind is often inspired by 70’s sci-fi cinema, or psychedelic art films from this era. Dreamscapes, or worlds of the mind and imagination are where this music resides, wide screen vistas, strange and evocative
