Oöphoi

Oöphoi is the pseudonym of Gianluigi Gasparetti.
Born in Rome, Italy, March 26, 1958. He started his own music experiments in 1995, with a basic instrumentation, trying to explore the shores of deep space-ambient music.
His first album "Three Lights at the End of the World", composed in 1995, has been released in 1996.
In 2002 he has founded the experimental ambient group Nebula, along with Klaus Wiese, Mauro Malgrande, Lorenzo Pierobon and Tau Ceti. He has released 20+ Cds for many international labels (Hic Sunt Leones, Amplexus, Hypnos, Nextera, Prikosnovenie, Electroshock Records, Skean Dhu, Stella Maris, Aplaus, Mystery Sea, Glacial Movements), and now he runs his own label Umbra, devoted to the music of new Italian ambient artists.

Oöphoi - The Rustling Of Leaves

Artist: Oöphoi
P: 2005
Originally this album was issued on cdr in a limited edition of 150 copies only. It has been sold out very fast and deleted. Now this release has quality studio mastering and a bonus track, which supplements organically the conceptual picture of the album, and special artwork: a cover with a centre spread and 6 cards inside – thereby each track has also an art idea. The album has been created in a classical Oophoi-style. Sound collages and moods remind of his early works, such as Spirals of time and Three lights at the end of the world. The music immerses the listener in autumn-winter landscapes, when nature has already fallen asleep, and winter is about to cover vivid autumn clothes with its white blanket. The ghostly female vocal in the first track sets the necessary aspect of perception at once, and after that listeners should only enjoy the different sides of autumn mood and drown into the world full of magic, peace and calmness.

Oöphoi - Three Lights at the End of the World

Artist: Oöphoi
P: 1996 / 2011
Re-mastered reissue of Oophoi's classic album from 1996-
Three Lights At The End Of The World is an expansive minimalist atmosphere from Oophoi. The expansive soundworlds are every thing but static. Gianluigi has created a vehicle for exploration of the boundaries of inner and outer space. The quiet and gentle sound design allows deep listeners to enter and exit at will, hence a dynamic soundscape.Once inside the soundworld, listeners are free to choose a destination. Meditators can choose to contemplate the self or the universe in search of truth.Oophoi’s multi-instrumental proclivity builds a friendly environment for many searches and journeys.
This is great minimalism from the lighter side of the spectrum.
Oophoi plays: Synthesizer, Flute (Lakota), Waterphone, Performer (Shells, Processed Natural Sounds, Woodchimes), Singing Bowls, Percussion, Electronics and Voice.

Oöphoi - Upuaut

Artist: Oöphoi,Mathias Grassow & Amir Baghiri
P: 2007
Upuaut is the unique, over 65 minutes long composition recorded by the Italian drone-ambient musician Oöphoi featuring Amir Baghiri and Mathias Grassow, who back in 1999 joined as guests during one special private concert. Since then it’s been circulating around the world as hard to find and poor (often bootlegged) cd-r releases only and now Upuaut is finally
officially and properly released. Fully re-mastered, repackaged, including the Great pyramid chamber updated diagram and the liner notes from the Egyptologist Dr. J.J. Hurtak,
Upuaut is one of the most profound, magical and sonically improved releases
from Oöphoi's extensive discography.

Seren Ffordd + Oophoi - The Martian Chronicles

Artist: Seren Ffordd + Oophoi
P:  2011
The Martian Chronicles, inspired by Ray Bradbury's story collection of the same name, sounds very much like the soundtrack to a mysterious and strange science fiction film that exists only in the imaginations of Seren Ffordd and Oöphoi. These seven tracks, while slow, moody and at times weirdly alien, also evoke a drama and emotional depth absent from much recent ambient music. It's a complex and beautiful mixture of electronic instruments, field recordings and percussion.
These artists will both likely be familiar to Hypnos listeners. Seren Ffordd has released several albums on our Hypnos Secret Sound imprint, and also contributed to the Hypnos compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard. The name Seren Ffordd (real name Andy Benford) is Welsh for Star Road, Way of Stars or Milky Way.
Oöphoi himself released Athlit in 2002, Distance to Zero (with Paul Vnuk) in 2006, and his Nebulae group project album Path of White Clouds in 2011, all on Hypnos. Gianluigi Gasparetti, the man behind Oöphoi, first became known for creating the excellent Italian music periodical Deep Listenings. His Oöphoi persona burst onto the ambient music scene in the late 1990s and quickly became one of the most talented and prolific sound artists around. He founded the now-defunct labels Umbra and Penumbra, which released the earliest recordings of Seren Ffordd. After working together in this capacity for several years The Martian Chronicles is their first collaboration, but not their last; the pair has already completed another full album worth of material.
We at Hypnos are proud to bring you this collaborative work from two of the most interesting and talented ambient musicians out there, and we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do.

V/A - Message from a subatomic World

Artist: Various Artists
P: 2008
Message from a Subatomic World excels at doing what the label does best with their compilations – introducing listeners to a variety of new and established artists in a cohesive album. Austere's "Crystil" is first, and it is a cool ten minute journey into a variety of ambient sounds. At first the music is almost imperceptibly quiet, but soon the soft drones are joined by beautiful wordless vocals that border on operatic in feel. Piano adds to the regal nature that briefly takes over before becoming soft drifting ambience again. Barely intelligible male vocals come later in forceful whispers.
Evan Bartholomew's "Sacrosanct" is next, and it does have a touch of the sacred about it – ambient church music perhaps. Bleeps and blips in "Distant Radiance" by Relapxych.0 are juxtaposed against glassy smoothness. Numina follows with "Nadir Ever Spirals," which swirls about in equal parts lightness and darkness. The entire disc, and this track in particular, has a very relaxed meditative quality. Jason Sloan paints a sonic picture of dark restlessness in "faded.forgotten[trace]." It is eerie and beautiful at the same time, whereas Phaenon's "Quantum Silence" dives down into the depths. Ironically, Stephen Philips "Down Deep" brings us out of the darkness with a comparatively light airy floater. Pure drones fans have to check out Eric Kesner, aka True Colour of Blood. His "Choosing To Remain Blind" is composed entirely on guitar, though its warm ambient tones scarcely resemble one.
Svartsinn creates a review for me with the perfectly titled "Cold But Strong."
The disc closes with one of the best known names in ambient music, Italy's Oöphoi. Also aptly named, "Icelight" could have formed a bookend with Svartsinn called "Cold But Bright" instead. With not a bad track to be found, this is an essential addition to any true ambient fan's music collection.
