Instruments include my trusty Roland CR-8000 drum machine, JX-3P and a pair of TB-303s driving better-sounding synths (Korg MS50 and Sequential Circuits Pro 1). There's the ubiquitous DX-7 in here plus MS-20 and SQ-10. Ah, those were the days.

Paul Nagle - The Silent Kingdom

Artist: Paul Nagle
P: 2024
These tracks are all P3 sequencer performances of a generally ambient nature. In one track (too-ripe pianos), the Cirklon sequencer is drafted in because I needed to loop 2 almost-identical 8 bar piano parts. If you are curious, the difference is that the copy got 2 extra (blank) steps of a 9th bar. And, yes, the cover is not without the influence of 'Grosses Wasser'. Most of this material is sequenced live on 4 parts of a Novation KS-4 synth drenched in an OTO BAM reverb. Tony Allgood's analogue delay helps too, plus his SRE-330 chorus sweetens the KS-4's edges and coaxes some cool string sounds from a Volca FM, mostly heard in its reverb imprint. Once, a DSI Pro2 sequencer pattern plays. What else? Well, some Minimoog and Soma Pipe feature in a couple of brief overdubs and perhaps there's a very tiny bit of V-Synth somewhere, and a Synthi wailing through the reverb in the far distance. Those things happen around here.
Anyway, minimal.

Paul Nagle - There And Back Again

Artist: Paul Nagle
P: 1981 / 2024
Beware, this is from 1981 when I was 19 and it's only here because someone asked to hear some old stuff. I Imagine this is enough to satisfy any curiosity.
As you can tell it's rough and hasn't aged well, like me.
It's also wavery, out of tune and usually done in one take with a 'that'll do' attitude. Again, like me. I could list its limitations or look for a better tape from the time, but, well, it'll do.
The earliest stuff of all goes back to around 1978/79 but that really is too terrible to share. Scary or what?
My thanks to Morgan Foster who went through so many old tapes for me and provided me with an invaluable backup!

This one's a fairly ambient one but seems to have worked out well, at least to my old ears. Along with the Scottish Suite, seems like I've found a bit of form. See what you think.
The aim was minimalism. I improvised on the pads of the ASM Hydrasynth module over a backing of old loops played too slow for added wonkiness. The wonkiness was caused by the unusual timestretch of the Boss RC-505 mark 1.
Some of the loops feature the Waldorf Blofeld and its mellotron samples were kindly donated by Duncan Goddard - thank you sir, you're a gentleman!
Thanks also to Boele Gerkes and Nigel Bradbury whose kindness brought this music into reality. Reality needs all the help it can get right now so you guys rock!
Final thanks to Tony Bateman who kindly allowed me to take liberties with his photo in designing the cover.

Paul Nagle - Transhuman Express

Artist: Paul Nagle
P: 2008 / 2024
Perhaps this is what he means by "sorta trippy"...it's still great sequencer music though...his beats are infectious and the synth lines shimmer as usual...but perhaps it feels less sharply focused than a lot of his output (probably because Paul's 'transhuman express' isn't quite a stairway to heaven)...but there's no doubt that it all works fine...
