Tangerine Dream - Lily On the Beach (Private)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1989

This album is probably more intense overall than its predecessor, "Optical Race", but with a slightly lighter mood and more variety toward the end. Paul Haslinger and Edgar Froese continue to show off their wizardry here on electronic keyboards, guitars and drums, and again the emphasis is on progressive, driving compositions that are never boring because they don't just stick to one pattern or texture, but morph and grow with each phrase. This music is undeniably cool and a great motivator for workouts or physical tasks. Standout numbers on "Lily on the Beach" include "Desert Drive", "Crystal Curfew", "Valley of the Kings" and the opening track, "Too Hot for My Chinchilla". The closing track, "Long Island Sunset", is nice too, with varying tempos and intensities, and accoustic saxophone and flute provided by guest artist Hubert Waldner. If you like "Lily on the Beach", you're sure to like two other Tangerine Dream releases too--"Optical Race" and "Melrose".

Tangerine Dream - Shy People

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1987 / 1988

Original Motion Picture by Jill Clayburgh and Barbara Hershey
Music Composed, Performed and Engineered by Tangerine Dream (Froese/Franke/Haslinger) in 1987.
* Singer: Jacquie Virgil - Lyrics: Edgar Froese
** Singer: Diamond Ross - Lyrics: Haslinger, Franke
Shy People is a relatively long track. It starts off, very similar with the intro from Shine On You Crazy Diamond, from the Pink Floyd record Wish You Were Here.
Jacquie Virgil, the singer, begins with beautiful wordless vocal, but when she sings the lyrics, you get very disappointed, as she sneers the words out. Especially in the chorus, that has an interestingly quirky synth-melody, she sounds like a bad Tina Turner. If you can get beyond the singing, the track is acceptable. Joe's Place is a dark piece, and it sounds as if the Mellotron has had a revival. This flashback, makes this 70's inspired track pretty interesting. The Harbor, sung by Diamond Ross, is uptempo synthrock, with well performed synth and guitar interaction, that has the track to be credited for. The singer, undoubtedly paid for the occasion, really can't deliver the goods, as Haslinger and Franke simply has provided some poor lyrics. The rhythm of the song reminds of One of These Days - yet another reference to Pink Floyd. Nightfall is background music, and not very interesting on record. Together with Brother Or Stranger from 1986, Dancing On A White Moon is the closest Tangerine Dream comes to genuine pop music. The experience of writing pop songs is almost on an embryonic stage. In spite of the killer synth riff, the track lacks a great deal of enthusiasm, not only from Jacquie Virgil, but also Tangerine Dream. It can tempt you to think, that the film producers wanted a soundtrack with pop songs, and Tangerine Dream only did it to afford the newest synths on the market.

V/A - Night Passage Demixed

Artist: Paul Haslinger, Lustmord,
Thomas Köner u.a.

P: 1996
Treatments of raw wire footage from Alan Lamb's "Night Passage" session tapes (Dorobo 013). Demixed and edited with respect.
WARNING : Low frequencies in track 4 may damage some speakers. Headphones recommended.
As the liner notes state, these were demixed and edited with respect. While bearing the trademark styles of each artist, the "treatment" requires attentive listening to find the wire footage buried in each mix.
If you aren't familiar with Lamb's work, this is a good place to start as the more drone/minimalism of the artists' work makes the journey more familiar than the often jostling experience of listening to the recordings on Lamb's "Primal Image" or "Night Passage" releases.
Lamb's releases are essential, however, especially to provide context. There is a strange sense of beauty and wonder in them as attested to the fact that the artists here chose to rework them.

One remix is even made by Paul Haslinger.
