Somber Frequencies is the the 5th release by Subtle Shift (formerly Within Reason) and a side project of space/berlin school/ambient artist Alpha Wave Movement. Subtle Shift is a more earthy organic and downtempo doppelgänger to AWM. Rhythms here are slow evolved beds of pulsing baselines and field recordings. Music drawn heavily from dub electronica, ambient and drone influences gently carries the negative vibes away and restores the listener with deep pools of introspective tone and gentle inflection. Somber frequencies is tuned into the essence of natures organic pulse distancing far from the concrete, glass and steel of urban entropy…

Music recorded from 1997 to 2005 that never found an enlightened path to a actual physical release. Most of the compositions can be compared to early trance electronica. Effort has been not to mimic that genre per se but rather use the style as a compass. There are also two ambient tracks from the archive to complete the release on gentle notes.

The concept of this music is the sleep cycle (which is poly/multi leveled process the body executes when engaged in the sleep cycle) and drawing one into a quiet listening space away from the chatter of bits and bytes and standard "urban" forced noise distractions.
Music to quiet the mind and bring one into a relaxed state of being.
The music was improvised with zero use of computers to assist in composition. There are some arpeggios utilizing the Nord Leads built in arpeggiator but quantization, sampled loops etc are nowhere to be found.
I purposely tried to create a direct minimalist approach unencumbered with the on-slaught of rhythmic distractions and instead chose an organic connection that balances human and machine/electronic instrument.
