Vidna Obmana

Vidna Obmana

Literally, vidnaObmana means 'optical illusion'. For more than twenty-four years, this metaphor would prove the suitable moniker for a project which has allowed Dirk Serries the ultimate freedom of placing his music before his personality. A self-taught electronic musician, Serries initially explored different musical formats bordering noise and dark sound collages in the early 80s before discovering canon-like looping techniques and subtle methods of shaping harmonies by merging different layers of no more than a few notes. Embracing the challenge of leaping into uncharted territory, he has continously refined his technique of minimalistic sound-sculpting while at the same time expanding his horizon with a wide range of rhythms and various acoustic instruments. Over the course of a long and winding career, Serries has also fused his recognisable style with various contemporary influences and seamlessly integrated avantgardistic elements.

Vidna Obmana - Subterranean Collective

Artist: Vidna Obmana
P: 2001
This double CD contains three recordings from the mid 1990s, Echoing Delight, Parallel Flaming, and The Spiritual Bonding. They find Serries in a transition period between abstract space music and techno-tribal trance works. A disciple of Steve Roach, Obmana's career generally tracks the evolution of the American synthesist. Adding to the parallels, Roach also appears on the collection, along with Robert Rich and Alio Die. Vidna Obmana is Serbo-Croatian for "optical illusion"; in his music, Serries conjures the audio equivalent of all manner of sensory distortions/legerdemain. Synthesizers create infinite glissandos wrapped around rhythms that range from tribal rituals to ominous zombie dances. Serries has a slightly more melodic sensibility than Roach, albeit melodies that are stretched out over time. Sometimes serene, often disturbing and threatening, the title Subterranean Collective, might be aptly extended to Subterranean Collective Consciousness as Obmana explores a psychological zone beneath the surface.

Vidna Obmana - The Contemporary Nocturne

Artist: Vidna Obmana
P: 2001
"Together with his previous solo release, The Surreal Sanctuary, this forms a set of deeply atmospheric, brooding textures. Vidna's fascination with the wind instrument called a fujara continues. "The Contemporary Nocturne is the second half of a set of shimmering ambient explorations initiated with 2000's The Surreal Sanctuary. The music from both discs focuses on various instruments (including fujara, E-bow, overtone flute) and textural timbres ("The Gaze In Dissonance" highlights 'four harmonics recycled,' sounding like a chorus of humming, broken glass), and traverses darker territory than most of his other work. "Mute Grief" glistens like moist crystals, like the memory of wind-chimes never touched by wind, before the fujara fumes agitatedly, a grief doused in defiance. The reverberant, brush-stroked fujara of "Duel" falls off the edge of the world into "Chasing The Odyssee," in which the sloping elasticity of the E-bow and electric guitar echoes and disintegrates into the soft black nothingness. This cavernous descent is indicative of much of the swirling ambience on The Contemporary Nocturne, as if Vidna is recording the sound of the moonlit glare as it reflects off of mirrored canyons. Rich, lovely work culled from the outer reaches of ambience, and indicative of the fact that Vidna is not content to just rehash the norm."

Vidna Obmana - The River of Appearance

Artist: Vidna Obmana
P: 1996
This is one of Vidna's very best solo efforts, and was composed between 1995 and 1996; he describes it, "The River of Apppearance translates my affection for the calm, serene and almost untouched: and it is definitely one of my most personal albums in years." Separated into eight pieces (ranging in length from 5'15" to 10'23"), the album as a whole is a peaceful, soothing excursion, with instruments (e.g., keyboard) often played "live" over an ambient background.

Vidna Obmana - Tremor

Artist: Vidna Obmana
P: 2001
Tremor is the first disc in Vidna Obmana's (Dirk Serries) trilogy based on Dante's Inferno. This is also quite a departure for Serries. He uses quite an array of eclectic devices to create this experimental -- almost avant-garde -- album. The most interesting sounds are from the overtone flutes and fujaras. Serries has commented that this is not an ambient CD. That is correct. This CD is interesting enough to be the focus of deep listening. It is not innocuous enough to be ignored as background music. It demands attention. The rhythms and atmospheres complement each other smoothly. The experimental sounds are neither dominant nor dominated. This disc is certainly electronic, definitely experimental, and decidedly Vidna Obmana. It will appeal to fans of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Jorge Reyes, and Ma Ja Le. Swirling, spiralling dissonance-- flutes, e-bows, industrial and tribal rhythms, voice, and-- during some of the best moments-- cool basslines. This CD is truly beautiful and hellish all at once.
