'Conception' was composed in response to a challenge to produce an “electroacoustic” composition as part of a performance festival at Dartington College of Arts. However, in recognition of my practice within the synthesizer music genre, I deliberately took a different direction and composed the work using one of the earliest digital synthesizers, my ever faithful Yamaha DX9. Conception is dedicated to composer and sound artist David Prior on the birth of his first child in 2003. 'The Tangible Whispers of Ghosts on the Threshold of Noise and Silence' and it’s companion piece 'Pan and Echo' are experiments in live performance feedback through electronic effects processing. The music is improvised and the spontaneity allows for unforeseen events that could not be contrived.'The Tangible Whispers of Ghosts…' is inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book 'The Poetics of Space' and Sigmund Freud’s essay 'The Uncanny', which are concerned with the nature of an artistic response to the sites and spaces of our intimate lives and the memories - ghosts - of our real or imagined past.'The Tangible Whispers of Ghosts on the Threshold of Noise and Silence' is dedicated to the composer Frank Denyer on his 65th birthday in April 2008.

Every track is fully formed and superb in its own right, and in a way this is a unique Michael Neil album filled with varying styles and approaches. Some will be instantly recognisable to MN fans, other styles may induce thoughts of "wow - I've never heard him do anything like this before!" - filmic, strident, symphonic, atmospheric - there's even sequencing on some tracks!
Among others you can hear shades of Eno and Vangelis, and the fact that this release in now supplemented by 4 superb previously unreleased tracks, it adds further lustre and makes this an essential purchase for Michael's many fans. (Graham Getty)

“In Extremis” is a neo-classical work by Michael Neil for which he used quotes from Virgil’s “Aeneid” and Pindar’s “Pythagoras” for the track titles, which helped to distance the work from any particular religious view in that it deals specifically with the subject of mortality.
The music is in a highly symphonic, non-rhythmic style, also marking the end of a compositional phase in which Michael’s approach was to simply sit at his instruments and work out harmonic and melodic forms and compositional structure in an improvisatory fashion.
Fans of massive string and choral pads will find lot of their liking in Michael’s free form music, which continues in the style of “Moments of Heavens” or the track “Charis 5”
There a beautiful sense of grace and reflection found in the seven fine crafted compositions, of which the fifth piece “In Memoriam to Peter Harrison” was written in response to the death of Peter Harrison, creator of the dark ambient and experimental music label Direction Music.
“In Extremis” concludes with the 20-minute “The Sea of Time & Space”, an epic symphony with emotional sweeps and melancholic undercurrents shimmering through the gradually building textural soundscapes.
