“If you think of music as a moving, changing form, and painting as a still form, what I’m trying to do is make very still music and paintings that move. I’m trying to find in both of those forms, the space in between the traditional concept of music and the traditional concept of painting.” Brian Eno Musician, producer, visual artist, thinker and activist Brian Eno first came to international prominence in the early '70s as a founding member of Roxy Music, and immediately followed with a series of critically-praised and influential solo albums. His visionary production includes albums with David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo, Laurie Anderson and Coldplay, whilst his long list of collaborations includes recordings with John Cale, David Byrne, Grace Jones and James Blake. Less widely discussed although equally notable and arguably even more prolific are his visual experiments with light and video. These are the fertile ground from which so much of his other work has grown, they cover an even longer span of time than his recordings, and have in recent decades paralleled his musical output. These highly-acclaimed works have been exhibited all over the globe - from the Venice Biennale and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg to Beijing’s Ritan Park and the sails of the Sydney Opera House.
‘Music For Installations’ is a collection of new, rare and previously unreleased tracks, all of which will be available on vinyl for the first time. All of the material was recorded by Eno for use in his installations covering the period from 1986 until the present (and beyond). Over this time he has emerged as the leading exponent of generative music worldwide and is recognised as one of the foremost audio-visual installation artists of his time.
Designed by Brian and long-time collaborator Nick Robertson, this beautifully bound package comes with a 64-page booklet featuring rare and unseen exhibition photographs and a new essay written by Eno.

Brian Eno - Music For Onmyo-Ji

Artist: Brian Eno
P: 2000
This 34-track, two-disc release features ambient music composed by Brian Eno and Peter Schwalm for the popular Japanese anime film ONMYOJI.
A double-CD, released only in Japan, which marks the first major team-up between Brian Eno and Peter Schwalm before their widely released Drawn From Life CD. The music on disc one is comprised of 14 tracks of traditional Japanese instruments, which are more appropriate for this CD, which is meant to accompany the Reiko Okano/Baku Yumemakura manga. The second disc leads one to ask what Schwalm actually adds to the mix in this collaboration. The sonic palette is very typical of Eno, with treated piano, synth washes, and a general modal sound to the floating proceedings. "Faraway Suns" has a rhythm to it, as well as some silvery, manipulated vocals, but it's not too far removed from Music for Films III. Schwalm would be more equal on Drawn From Life, but here he seems in awe of working with the master. An expensive purchase, by the way, import as it is -- worth it mostly to the Eno fanatic. ~ Ted Mills
Japanese release from ambient pioneer comes with 3d hologram jacket limited to 50,000 copies. 2000 release. Double digipak.

Interestingly, there are critics who are not very happy with the amount of time that Brian Eno and Peter Schwalm contributed to this release. The misunderstanding regarding the content of this 2-CD set is understandable however. This title does come up when a search for CDs by Brian Eno or Peter Schwalm is performed, so therefore, folks might think that they are getting a Brian Eno and/or Peter Schwalm CD.
But that is not the case here. What you are getting is traditional Japanese Heian music, which is what comprises the 74-minute first disc. The Heian period in Japanese history was from 794 to 1192 A.D. This is indeed an eye-opener for those who are musically adventurous (and I would think such would be the case for any fan of Brian Eno's music).
That leaves the 28-minute second disc. According to the liner notes, Brian Eno states his intention to create an alternate musical universe on disc two... one that is not necessarily Japanese in sound, but one that could have conceivably coexisted with Heian music. In that regard, and taken in that context, they have succeeded admirably well. In fact, I cannot imagine listening to disc two without having listened to disc one first. Together, they make an integral package and should be regarded as such.
That said, why is disc two only 28 minutes long? Perhaps it was all that was required. Why is it so expensive? Because it is a Japanese import, and like other Japanese imports, the price tag is not unusual. The packaging is pretty spectacular as well.
Is this a good "introduction" to Brian Eno's music? Considering the price tag and length of the Eno's contribution, the answer is no. On the other hand, this release is not just for "completists" either. Certainly, listening to both discs with an open mind will yield a mind-opening experience.

Brian Eno - Neroli

Artist: Brian Eno
P: 1993
Subtitled Thinking Music Part IV. 1993 ambient masterpiece. As beautiful and sparse as anything produced to date, Eno sets a mood of quiet contemplation that, as he himself states in the liner notes, is a piece to 'reward attention, but not (be) so strict as to demand it.'

Brian Eno - Nerve Net

Artist: Brian Eno
P: 1992
"Nerve Net" is an interesting work where it takes a hard left turn toward more "funk" and "fusion" renderings a la Jon Scofield and/or Pat Metheney. There are, of course, typical Eno "ambient" moments contained within this set, however, the true mood here is "electric." It's quite the departure from its predecessor, the dark and brooding, "Shutov Assembly," but it does have moments of that album too. It's livelier, beat-heavy in places and more charged than his usual stripped down, mellow fare; like he drank a few cups of Espresso in the midst of creating it.

Brian Eno - Performed by Dedalus Ensemble

Artist: Brian Eno Performed by Dedalus Ensemble
P: 2023
With Discreet Music (1975), Music for Airports (1978), and Thursday Afternoon (1985), Brian Eno invented a new genre of music: ambient music he defined as being able to accommodate many levels of attention while listening without forcing a particular one; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.
This version performed and arranged by the Dedalus Ensemble goes beyond what we expect from it. Founded in 1996 by Didier Aschour, the ensemble is a contemporary music ensemble based in Toulouse. Their repertoire includes works by minimalist classics: Christian Wolff, Phill Niblock, Frederic Rzewski, Tom Johnson, Moondog or Philip Glass.

Brian Eno - Small Craft on a Milk Sea

Artist: Brian Eno
P: 2010
During the first ten years of the new century, Brian Eno has released some albums that come close to his classics of the seventies and eighties, for example DRAWN FROM LIFE, with Peter Schwalm, or the brilliant song cycle ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH. Now, the creator of ambient music will release his first solo album on Warp Records, specialists for experimental, electronic pop. And he is working with some soulmates, Leo Abrahams (guitar, weird sounds) and Jon Hopkins (drums, electronics, strange sounds).
Good companionship for a purely instrumental record that reaches far out - and starts almost too beautiful, with the ambient sugar of EMERALD AND LINE. But even this soft starter has some grainy elements of total emptiness in it - the picture of a silent sea springs to mind (a picture Eno has often recurred to in his songs). The following three soundscapes belong to the 1000 places you will have to go to before you die. COMPLEX HEAVEN, SMALL CRAFT ON A MILK SEA and the driving, irresistible rhythms of FLINT MARCH contain everything you expect from great Eno pieces, a sense of wonder, and an ambivalent field of emotion. On FLINT MARCH, the elastic drums of Mr. Hopkins add to an exercise of nearly uninhibited joie de vivre (but even here, as repeated listening reveals, some dark forces are working in the background)
This 15-track journey then continues with some wild pieces, a quiet foreboding of danger, and rough passages with frenetic guitar playing (too frenetic in the case of PALEOSONIC, where the effect of harshness gets slightly unnerving). Nevertheless, most of the time the listener is getting lost in a very interesting way - between child-like moods, disturbing fields of sound, apparitions of naked beauty. And, finally, after some upheaval and dancing on a razorblade, the quiet atmospheres of the beginning re-enter the scenery: WRITTEN, FORGOTTEN & LATE ANTHROPACENE explore a quality of peacefulness and yearning beyond kitsch and wrong happy endings by just touching a deep zone of human experience.
This is definitely a record Eno-friendly minds and a lot of newcomers will return to again and again. SMALL CRAFT ON A MILK SEA is so fresh, so full of wonder, so far away from being a repetition of any other Eno album. Of course, there are some spirits drifting: on COMPLEX HEAVEN Eno sounds like channeling his early piano treatments for Harold Budd. The first track, EMERALD AND LINE, has a kind of Roedelius flair. But, well, on this great work even the memories are inventive - playing tricks under a strangely coloured sky!

Brian Eno - Sonora Portraits 1 (Book + CD)

Artist: Brian Eno
P: 1999
This CD exceeded my expectations for two reasons: 1) although it is compiled of previously released music, the selection and arrangement create an entirely unique atmosphere; and 2)The booklet has very insightful analyses of Mr. Eno's music theory and influence.

The compilation focuses on Mr. Eno's approachable, mellow music styles rather than his avante guarde, quirky ones. The Italian company that released this CD seems to be creating a series of recording artist "portraits", and I can't help but feel validated by their selection of Mr. Eno as Number 1.
