Gert Emmens - Wanderer of Time

Artist: Gert Emmens
P: 2003

“Wanderer Of Time” could easily become a classic in the retro-scene. It has it all: haunting sequences, traditional sounds, great effects, nice rhythms and beautiful melodies. Tangerine Dream couldn’t have done it better in their big years. The epic title track, which opens the CD, already sets the standard for the rest of the album. The very melodically “Gaspra” is a composition Gert created for the double compilation-CD with is provided with the 27th issue of the English electronic music magazine “Sequences”. “Alien Matter” contains some of the best sequences on the album. “Elektra World” and “The Voyage Of Voyager 1” also have influences from Vangelis because of the fat solo’s from the Yamaha CS-synths (remember the harmonica-like solo sound in Vangelis’ “Ballad”?).
“Wanderer Of Time” is an album, which might place Gert Emmens on one of the top positions of retro-electronic music. Dutch treat.

Gert Emmens - Waves of Dreams

Artist: Gert Emmens
P: 2004 / 2007

Again, the Dutchman surprises us with his pleasant melodic retro electronic music that is played excellently.
“After The Rain” opens with soft sequences after which intriguing rhythms take over. In the third part of the track Mike Oldfield-like sequences enter and bring the listener in electronic heaven. This is absolutely top electronic music.
And it doesn’t stay with this piece alone: tracks like “Another Time, Another Space”, “Waves Of Dreams” and the somewhat darker “Bright Spot On A Grey Day” all bear the same quality (well, actually all tracks).
Electronic music that is built up beautifully, with great sequences, atmospheres, Mellotron sounds and solos. Gert sets himself apart from most other retro/Berlin School electronic music by always keeping the melody on top. This makes his music very special.
And the musical content is not enough: also the recording is great, the cover by Pablo Magne beautiful (it almost looks like cover from Pink Floyd or The Alan Parsons Project) and the list of equipment Gert uses (a lot of vintage gear) is very impressive.
This all makes “Waves Of Dreams” amongst the absolute top in retro-electronic music.

Gert Emmens - When Darkness falls upon the Earth

Artist: Gert Emmens
P: 2005

Gert Emmens has the unique ability to mix the pure essence of the Berlin School with excellent melodies. In his music, there is almost no room for ultra-long intros and stretched sequencer lines. No, all of his tracks have a head and tail. This approach has put the Dutchman on the very top of electronic music and “When Darkness falls upon the Earth” proves this once again. This album is the best he has ever made.
The album starts in ”Rendezvous With 2004 MN4” with a great (short) ambient intro after which the sequences and rhythms fall in. Gert’s solos (amongst others -he uses a lot of “old” gear- the legendary Yamaha CS80-synth) are fat and fitting. What an opening. But there is more.
The title track and “Nostalgia” contain some of the best melodies Gert has ever composed.
“Casting Shadows On The Cold Ground”, quite Tangerine Dream-like, is maybe the best Berliner Schule-track he has come with so far. The sequences are masterful.
“The Morning After (extended version)” was initial a piece written for “Analogy”, an analog project that will be released soon.
The last track “Requiem Pour Sam” is a short melancholic track that was made especially for two fans of Gert because of the sad loss of their little boy Sam. With “When Darkness Falls Upon The Earth”, Gert delivers the best retro-EM has to offer nowadays. And the cover -by Pablo Magne- is again a treat.

Mark Jenkins - Modular Sessions 15: Battle of the Robots

Artist: Mark Jenkins, Gert Emmens, O.Briand u.a.
P: 2023
LTD 100
The next in the ‘Modular Sessions’ series of monthly limited run numbered collaborative CD's is second in a trilogy introduced with MS10 ‘Rise Of The Robots’, and features a great list of European guest synthesists - Olivier Briand (France), Arend Westra (aka Eagle Synth from Holland), Gert Emmens (Holland) and Gilda Razani (Germany).
Once again the album picks up some of the more rhythmic, beats-oriented improvised tracks from the original Modular Sessions recordings by Mark Jenkins, overlaying them with sequencers, synth melodies, guitar and vocoders.

The 14 Tracks featured on the album will appeal to lovers of Jean-Michel Jarre, KRAFTWERK, SPACE ART, HELDON, STAR INC and other melodic synth acts - though there's plenty there for lovers of Klaus Schulze, Edgar Froese and TANGERINE DREAM around the ‘Hyperborea’ period, and particularly of Johannes Schmoelling and LOOM in the CD's many long, fluid MiniMoog solos.

‘Battle Of The Robots’ follows the story of seven little robots in the war against humanity, conjuring up the excitement of guarding the secret robot factory, saboteur missions, and night watch in the trenches.
French synthesist Olivier Briand creates short sonic "Robograms" as their encrypted orders arrive, while Arend Westra and Gert Emmens contribute wonderfully developing sequencer layers. Gilda Razani's expressive Theremin conjures up the sound of the giant robot cargo whales tasked with secretly delivering their new and ever more powerful weapons, while eerie digital and vocoder voices further the compelling plot...

All tracks produced at Unicorn Studio London by MARK JENKINS (synthesizers / guitar / vocoder).
