Yanni - Live at the Acropolis

Artist: Yanni
P: 1994

Although the music dates to 1994, this is as crisp as any music recorded yesterday. It shows Yanni's love for 'classical' music, since the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra gives his music much more depth than he could possibly give by performing the pieces alone. Now, not leaning on 'synth' effects, the music is its own testimony. A great collection of masterpieces.
The music is on the Private Music label, now part of history, but once owned by Peter Baumann. He wanted to give artists their own label and to let them make their own music. Other great albums of Yanni, especially the first two 'Keys to Imagination' and 'Out of Silence' were also available on this label. These albums are richly represented on this live recording. Happily, the second part of the CD touches also more recent music by Yanni, showing that he is a tall, and growing artist.
The joy heard on this album is in my opinion contributed to the successful collaboration of all participating artists, not in the least to the ones that made the historical setting an overwhelming background for this beautiful night.

Yanni - Love Songs

Artist: Yanni
P: 2000

Love Songs by Yanni is an extraordinary album to own. The soothing, relaxing sounds from Yanni will put you in a trance as soon as you hear the 1st track. "In the Morning Light" feathers a new sound of love through your head and puts you in the mood as easy as it comes. The notes Yanni hits in "Almost a Whisper" can be compared to some of the great anthems of our time as it will never leave your head, filling your mind with fine thoughts of plush velvet silk and the fresh scent of red rose pedals slowly accenting from a breeze onto a vanilla bed of dreams. Yanni delivers once again on this brilliant and vibrant album filled with passionate love songs to hug you to sleep. "Felitsa" is one of my personal favorites as the sounds of ocean waves crashing against white washed rocks on a pebbled beach come to mind and bring upon you instantaneous heaven. Finally, "Enchantment" is the gem of this album. You will hear beautiful sounds and visions of greek gods caressing your shoulders behind Yanni's sexy notes. This is a great cd to add to your Yanni bedroom shrine of his lyrical infection and white lace scented candles. Curl up by the fireplace, dim the lights, or even start a hot bubble bath and get ready to indulge in the sweet sounds of Yanni.

Yanni - Nightbird

Artist: Yanni
P: 1997

This seven-track budget sampler seems to exist for no other reason than to showcase three compositions--"Point of Origin" (from Out of Silence), "Days of Summer," (from Chameleon Days), and "Dance with a Stranger" (from Niki Nana)--that never found home on one of Yanni's seven other samplers. --Terry Wood

Yanni - Niki Nana

Artist: Yanni
P: 1989

Unlike anything else in his discography, Niki Nana could be fairly described as Yanni's idea of a party album. Buoyant, tropical, and well-intentioned, Yanni apparently yearns for this music to inspire humankind to latch on to its hips and form an intercontinental conga line that snakes its way around the globe. "Niki Nana," the liner notes inform us, means "We're one," and who could fault such a notion or question Yanni's sincerity? It's just that the music is so... different. Not necessarily bad, but certainly different. Bright, bouncy, and liberally adorned with horn and vocal accents, each piece except "First Touch" and "Quiet Man" is a clear departure from the regal romanticism customarily associated with the keyboardist. --Terry Wood

Yanni - Optimystique

Artist: Yanni
P: 1980 / 1984 / 1989

Those who feel that Yanni is all new age fluff will be surprised by this album. Many of the cuts are very dynamic and moving. Almost Rick Wakeman inspired tracks. Sounding somewhat like sports show themes, the pieces are synthetic and dramatic. Originally recorded in 1980, this assortment of dated electronic music was rereleased in 1989 when Yanni's career was just starting to catch fire. Recognize it for what it is: an historical document, an audio time capsule intended only for the most zealous of fans. It appears Yanni was in something of a Styx phase when he composed much of this music. It has its occasional charms, but they are sporadic.

Yanni - Out of Silence

Artist: Yanni
P: 1987

Perhaps his most celebratory recording, Out of Silence is Yanni's second release and is well-stocked with some of his most uplifting works: the sparkling "Sand Dance," for instance, and the cinematic, chest-swelling "After the Sunrise." Two of the most riveting selections found on Live at the Acropolis had their origin here: "Standing in Motion" and "Within Attraction." While a selection such as "Point of Origin" might bring Tangerine Dream to mind, this release is probably the most John Tesh-like of any of Yanni's recordings, and that's intended as a compliment. (Tesh, in fact, once performed in Yanni's backup band.) The closing track, the pulsing "Paths of Water," is outstanding.

Yanni - Reflections of Passion

Artist: Yanni
P: 1990

Reflections of Passion is the first of what has became a near-torrent of "best-of" collections and other repackagings involving Yanni's early work. To avoid confusion when pondering the long list of Yanni "special projects," keep this in mind: Reflections of Passion is the pick of the litter, a handsome distillation of Yanni's most imaginative period, his Out of Silence and Chameleon Days era. This was before saxophones and sopranos and string sections began cluttering what had been one of contemporary instrumental music's most arresting and thoughtfully energized keyboard-powered sounds. Listen to the commanding-yet-nonaggressive bravura of "After the Sunrise" and "The Rain Must Fall" and recall the days when Yanni infused the "new age" genre with a refreshingly brawny sound, a distinctive style that surged as convincingly as it serenaded. The straightforward approach displayed on this superb sampler is a welcome reminder of the evocative sparks Yanni's compositions could strike before he entered his black-velvet and pink-bow phase. Even the disk's three bonus tracks, particularly "Flight of Fantasy," are aglow with the keyboardist's then-unmistakable style of saintly sexuality. Here's hoping future Yanni works don't merely reflect the passion, but recapture it as well. --Terry Wood
