Roedelius, Hans Joachim
Roedelius + Story - 4 Hands

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius & Tim Story
P: 2022
4 Hands, an intimate and surreal musical conversation on the piano from German sound pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius and American composer Tim Story, is an example of all the warm yet otherworldly beauty that can come from approaching a shared love for a singular instrument from overlapping directions. Recorded sequentially but on one and the same grand piano, Roedelius laid down a few impromptu piano études in May 2019 whilst visiting his transatlantic friend Story. Tim then learned all their intricate phrasings to add his own parts in the following months.

Roedelius - Aquarello

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius
P: 1998
One of Roedelius' finest records is this document of live performances with Nicola Alesini and Fabio Capanni as Aquarello. Strangers to Hans-Joachim Roedelius and his music will find in this record an excellent sampling of his talents and his unique musical language. Roedelius performs piano, keys, samples and voice, and is joined by Alesini's masterful alto and soprano sax and Capanni's innovative e-bow and treatments. Alesini's sax has such a distinct voice and manner, and he can truly be said to be "singing" through his instrument, gently telling stories through his song. Capanni, for his part, has complete command of the e-bow, and what is so exceptional about his playing is the remarkably wide range of sound he can produce through his instrument. These three composers/performers work extremely well together, in harmony one with each of the others, and so it's no surprise that this isn't the first time they've worked together.

Roedelius - Einfluss

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius
P: 2017
Roedelius, who has also published bulky, odd and hard-to-find works between Krautrock, Avantgarde, Electronica and Ambient in his extensive catalog, concentrates here on his tender and frugal piano playing, which is occasionally supplemented by quiet sound surfaces from the synthesizer. The often felt-crafted piano has an exceptionally soft sound and the microphones must have been as close to the instrument as some of Nils Frahm's recordings, because many background noises are captured so that the listener is in close proximity to the instrument. A wonderfully intimate sound is created, which fits in well with the sparingly-decelerated playing of the two musicians. Music for the head and heart, which achieves great effect with few means. Thank you for this sonorous blessing.

Roedelius - Fortress of Love

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius
P: 1989
"Fortress of Love", is one of the most personal albums of Roedelius. He expresses emotions such as friendliness, warmth and confidence in slightly melancholic melodies, that always wear Roedelius' typical handwriting. Skillfully interweaves it with synthetic elements, the instruments played by friends, resulting in a wonderfully pleasing overall picture.

Roedelius - Gift of the Moment (Geschenk des Augenblicks)

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius
P: 1984 / 2011
There is room for ambivalence when it comes to Roedelius’ solo work, and yet, this album delivers in a consistent and well crafted way from beginning to end. It’s probably my favorite of his solo releases, with its confident and poetic stride. In addition to giving the acoustic piano, cello, and violin lead billing to the synth (it’s here, just not front and center), this record includes one of the most profoundly beautiful Roedelius tracks ever written, “Wurzeln des Glücks (Roots of Joy).” The naturalism and Germanic sun-dappled forest-dweller vibe on this track is a dreamy addition to the smattering of Roedelius tunes found on his other records, that, although limited in number, are some of the most lovely songs I’ve ever heard. Someday I will make that perfect Roedelius mix, I’m just afraid it will be a lot shorter than I want it to be. But for all the hit and miss his oeuvre delivers, it’s hard to deny the simplicity and elegiac profundity in the songs that work. It is for that reason I return again and again to his music, as well as because he consistently finds resolve in the tension between the electronic and the acoustic, persistently falling back on repetition and basic melody to under gird the work. Drawn to its simplicity, I am as much attracted to his contemplative forebodings and moody song structures as anything, and in the end his music stands resolutely on its own.

Roedelius - Jardin au Fou

Artist: Hans Joachim Roedelius
P: 1978 / 1998
This is an excellent reissue. Roedelius' second solo album outside of his main project at the time, Cluster, (originally Kluster).
This album was more "acoustic" based, as far as featuring prominant piano, and organ, rather than an electronic, music concrete' atomosphere.
Some wacky, almost circus-like, organ themes come up now and again, but as an overall album, really fun, contemplative.
