Mark Jenkins - Modular Sessions 6

Artist: Mark Jenkins
P: 2022
LTD 100
The regular ‘Modular Sessions’ collaborative CD has been rescheduled in favour of this musical tribute by Mark Jenkins to "the four masters" - Klaus Schulze, Vangelis, Edgar Froese and Jean-Michel Jarre, sadly three of whom are no longer with us and the last happily still active and innovative.
Painstakingly analysing the sounds, style and soloing techniques of these four musicians at very specific times in their career, the album offers four epic pastiche pieces – one for each - plus two Bonus Tracks of remix versions.

As for the music … ‘An Encore’ opens the set as a thirteen-minute track in the style of Edgar Froese's TANGERINE DREAM live in 1976 …somewhere between ‘Ricochet’ and ‘Encore’.
‘Caress The Technology’ follows and notches up almost nineteen minutes of music in Klaus Schulze's more techno style of the late 1990's, even with a guest guitarist!
‘Band In The Spring’ is just over nine minutes of EM in an early Jean-Michel Jarre style invoked in an up-tempo, very French piece.
‘Farewell’ is the full six-minute plus version of an emotive remembrance of Vangelis as he was around his ‘Spiral’ album period.
The two Bonus Tracks comprise a thirteen-minute studio version of ‘An Encore’ and three minute single mix of ‘Band In The Spring’.

Mark Jenkins - Modular Sessions 8 Planetary Fantasies

Artist: Mark Jenkins & Others
P: 2022
LTD 100
"Planetary Fantasies" gets back to basics with lengthy, powerful Berlin-style sequencer tracks. The latest in the monthly numbered limited run collaborative CD's sounds like an interplanetary travel brochure from the future, with titles like "Thrill At The March Of Sentient Jungles!" and "Glide Down Frozen Methane Canyons!". Special guests Ken Martin, Gert Blokzijl and (in a first collaboration for 30 years with album producer Mark Jenkins) synth pioneer Peter Beasley create the sequencer underscores, while Mark together with Canadian space music act Cables For Clouds and music journalist Paul Wiffen on guitar add compelling melodies, harmonies and synth effects. "Wonder At The Planet Of Illusions" incorporates Gert Blokzijl's dreamy sequence for over quarter of an hour, while at over 24 minutes long, the epic "Dare Visit the Moonlet of Cybernetic Organisms!" is strongly reminiscent of Klaus Schulze in his Wahnfried/techno phase, with all the sounds of Yamaha CS80 and PPG keyboards, the EMS Synthi and lead MiniMoog and guitar.

Mark Jenkins - Modular Sessions 9 In the Mouth of Madness

Artist: Mark Jenkins & Others
P: 2022
LTD 100
Titled after John Carpenter’s petrifying ‘Lovecraftian’ horror movie, the most powerful yet of the monthly numbered limited run CD series spins together a taste of Carpenter’s own music plus the styles of: Johannes Schmoelling and LOOM, Peter Baumann, Mark Shreeve, HELDON, ZOMBI, Klaus Schulze layering multiple sequencers on ‘Big In Japan’, or TANGERINE DREAM playing ‘The Keep’ and ‘Sorcerer’.
So yes, just five lengthy tracks, and in places it’s almost rock music - but with storming ratcheting sequencers, vocoder poems, screaming lead synthesizer sounds, Jarre-like analog twiddles, gothic choral layers and bizarre digital landscapes.

Guests of Mark Jenkins on this issue are Dieter Niemand on many and varied forms of electronic percussion, and Argentinian synth expert Ernesto Romeo creating the basis of ‘I’m Taking Back Those Eyes You Stole From Me’, a 14-minute techno-minimalist epic patterned after Manuel Gottsching’s legendary ’E2-E4’.

Mark Jenkins - Sequencer Loops

Artist: Mark Jenkins
P: 2002
The result is being described as sounding like "Tangerine Dream meets Hawkwind", or "Jean-Michel Jarre jamming with Carlos Santana". The technology used to achieve this groundbreaking style involves everything from 20-year-old kit-built synthesizers to the massive triple keyboard yamaha ex1, via computers, samplers and exotic rhythm machines. Epic tracks with running times from 4 up to more than 10 minutes typically open with multiple analog sequencers, overlaid with electric and acoustic guitars, samples, vocoders or recorded voices. In another indication of the range of styles covered, the cd is dedicated to the memories of Camel keyboardist Peter Bardens, whose melodic minimoog playing particularly was an early influence on mark's style, and of legendary can guitarist Michael Karoli.

Mark Jenkins - Sequencer Loops 2

Artist: Mark Jenkins
P: 2003
MARK JENKINS celebrates 25 years in electronic music with a follow-up to massively acclaimed "Sequencer Loops". Again the mix is of classic and modern synths, flowing electric guitar and compelling sequencer and drum rhythms, earning comparisons with Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield and Jan Hammer at their best.   On "Sequencer Loops 2", classic synths like the MiniMoog and Prophet soar over pulsating sequencers and pads and duel with guitar, vocoder and sampled voices. Long, ambient tracks in the style of Klaus Schulze alternate with shorter melodic pieces, and there are guest appearances by two US presidents and an ex-starship captain!
