Spacetime, as physicists have understood it since Albert Einstein at the latest, consists of the three dimensions of space and the fourth dimension, time. It has long been known that the time dimension's properties, such as the clear, irreversible direction in which time runs, can be justified by the second law of thermodynamics. According to this, the entropy never decreases in a closed system. Entropy can be understood as a measure of the number of possible states of a system and therefore also, simplified, as a measure of the order of a system. So order does not arise by itself. Time flows in the direction in which disorder increases.
