Isham, Mark

Mark Isham (b. September 7, 1951, in New York) is an American trumpeter, synthesist and Academy Award-nominated composer. He works in a variety of genres, including jazz, electronic and film music.
Isham studied classical music, but also became interested in jazz, rock, and pop music. During the 70s he became a touring and session musician in various assemblies (Charles Lloyd, Beach Boys, Van Morrison) and appeared later as guest musician on many releases of well-known artists (David Sylvian, Rolling Stones, Susan Vega).
His early solo releases during the 80s had a strong emphasis on electronics, ranging from New Age (all Windham Hill releases) to abstract (soundtracks). During the 90s Isham rediscovered his roots in (contemporary) classical music and jazz and blended these genres in many releases of this incredibly productive period of his career.

Mark Isham + Art Lande - We Begin
Artist: Mark Isham + Art Lande
P: 1987
The piece begins with some brooding trumpet work by Isham and gradually evolves into a stirring crescendo of brass, piano and percussion. Then, with most of the instruments creeping into fade-out, the only remaining element is Lande on piano, hauntingly sounding out note after gradual note, evoking an eerie stillness that is both exhilarating and utterly unnerving. This album is for anyone who likes "new age" with a bite (a la Philip Glass or Brian Eno) and without the saccharine ponderings of a Yanni or an Andreas Vollenweider. Whatever genre it belongs to, "We Begin" is a true find.

Mark Isham - Film Music
Artist: Mark Isham
P: 1985
After scoring many, many films... I always seem to come back to this c.d which compiles three movies scores onto one and each distiguishably different from one another and it's refreshing to listen to a soundtrack that doesn't repeat the same theme over and over which is quite common. If I had to be stranded on a desert island and had a choice of c.d's to come with me, I can not be without "FILM MUSIC"... That's saying a lot of high praise for a musician that was little more than just a session trumpet player playing with the likes of The Beach Boys, Van Morrison. Van Morrison always demanded the best from his musicians or quite simply they didn't play for him at all.
If you haven't seen the movie Mrs. Soffel, don't bother the music clearly out shines the movie...Lyle Mays on piano is amazing and expect lots of penny whistle, synthesizers and being that the setting takes place in Pittsburgh, the industrial sounds of a steel mill. The "Times Of Harvey Milk" is just under 9 minutes, it never gets a chance to mold into anything other than sounding alright. What ever fault there may be with "Times Of Harvey Milk" it was an important score for him to score because of him growing up in the San Francisco area, the main focally point in the documentary...Times Of Harvey Milk went on to win a Academy Award for best documentary. And lastly "Never Cry Wolf"...wow, thats what made me run out to buy the c.d in the first place. You could not ask for a better score to compliament the wintery terrain of Alaska. Although very somber through out the most part, there is a brief moment that will raise a few hairs on the back of your neck...my favorite part of the score, lots and lots of drumming.
What more can I say, just run out and buy it...highly recommended.

Mark Isham - Vapor Drawings
Artist: Mark Isham
P: 1983
Vapor Drawings is Mark Isham's debut. He is a multi-instrumentalist and incorporates brass, reeds, percussion, acoustic piano, and synths into his sound design. The mix is the key to the success of this listening experience. Isham gives each instrument proper respect as they intertwine to create exotic atmospheres and simple soundscapes. There are ambient moments, but this album is firmly new age and contemporary instrumental. It is a pleasant experience that will appeal to fans of John Flomer, Jon Jenkins, Stephen Bacchus, and Jim Oliver.
