Trancendental Anarchists - Cluster One
Artist: Trancendental Anarchists
P: 1994

Another nice release from Silent Records. This is one of the few Ambient albums that I feel safe driving to (since I've been known to fall asleep at the wheel -- it's genetic). Some tracks have a decent amount of beats, but they're not very demanding. The rest are smooth and tonal, and drift very nicely.

Transceive - Intrigue

Artist: Transceive
P: 2001

The label described this as a cross between Mark Shreeve and T Bass UK. I know what they mean in that the production is extremely good and the emphasis is on excitement and power over subtlety- in other words just how I like it. The opener 'Bygone Daze' for instance begins with what sounds like a spaceship beginning to land then we get swirling atmospherics and effects. It takes just over a minute before a superb cracking sequence and heavy rhythmic flourishes pound forth. Things develop into a highly infectious rockin' groove. With a minute to go the music subsides a little allowing a really nice melodic motif to be heard. It had been there before but I was too busy air drumming to hear it. 'Intrigue' initially utilizes some delightful soft pads and an exquisite delicate rhythm- then blast! In enters a simply fantastic rhythmic / sequencer combination with high hat splashes. Again the production is spot on. This track isn't all bludgeoning power however, the melodies are extremely well done- infectious even, both in the lead line and sequencer departments. Things rarely stay still as we take one extremely exciting turn after another. We drift into the next track 'Emor Femus'. A piano melody can be heard- all rather nice it is too. A quick jaunty sequence soon starts up accompanied by a great rumbling rhythm. Some sighing pads act like a soft mist above a raging tempest but by the three minute mark another bass laden rhythm is tossed in scattering the mist but in response back comes the piano melody somehow sounding just right amongst the mayhem, sort of beauty and violence living side by side- Awesome!
'Tera's Secret' begins with a slow loping beat over a twangy melodic loop then up steps another superb sequence, detail being provided by a slightly Eastern sounding melody. Its another brilliant track the swirling pulsations and rhythms taking you to places way beyond those reachable through taking any iffy substance. 'Internal Inferno' takes off with a rapid high register sequence, thick melodic pads slowly wafting over the top- then POW! A ball breaking rhythmic loop thunders forward like some crazed robot destroying everything in its path. The rhythm changes but if anything is of even more earthquake proportions. The original rhythm comes back but unbelievably is even more intense than before. Its as if we are just above a futuristic raging battle - pretty no - exciting YES!'Resume' follows straight on. It is a very short track and has a much lighter mood to it, necessary I would imagine just to get some composure back. 'Extremes' has a rather dark eerie beginning- strange clanging noises and thick pads create a very sinister environment out of which a metallic sequence forms. Then a really nice melodic lead line starts up contrasting well with the increasingly powerful backing. The sequence now changes to a swirling rota blade type and the piano melody returns. It reminded me rather of music for the beginning of an epic film (Almost James Bondish but without the vocals). At times it did get a little twee for my tastes but then that's probably just me, there is no doubting that its an extremely accomplished piece of music. Some excellent sampled vocals and the tolling of a bell give 'Beneath The Lake' a very sinister introduction. Deep bass string pads again giving it a rather film music feeling. The sound of thunder announces the start of a metallic sequence and combined with the lead line the picture music feeling is enhanced still further. The sound is so descriptive however that no accompanying visuals are needed, your mind will conjure up all the images you need. The last track 'Intrigued' is a reworking of the second and finishes this superb album in storming fashion. If you get the impression from this review that I really like the album you would be spot on. Actually 'like' doesn't come close- its brilliant. Steve Nelson the man behind Transceive is a very talented man. (DL)

TUU - The Frozen Lands

Artist: TUU
P:
1999
LTD 1000
Definitely a departure from the dense tribal atmospheres of previous Tuu recordings, The Frozen Lands is equally entrancing, just an alternate means of arriving at a different location. I would certainly liked to have heard more, but grant a 9.1 for these beautifully shapeless artifacts from another sonic region. In his first solo release, Martin Franklin steers Tuu's sound away from the humid tribal excursions of, say, Terma. Instead, this 21-minute mini-disc delivers a panoramic slice of otherworldy vistas straight from The Frozen Lands. Gone are the ethnic instruments and earthy rhythms; this is a place of rolling clouds of sound, an unkown area bathed in washes of lightness and darkness.

Ünn - Silence

Artist: Ünn

Mikrolux MKX13CD
Elektrolux has the reputation of sometimes neglecting the emotional impact of music in favour of emphasising mechanical sounds. This, however, is not true for üNN, the main project of the Frankfurt multimedia artist Frank Rückert. Working as VJ for Sven Väth, Pascal FEOS, DJ Hell or Monika Kruse, the computer scientist is an integral part of the international Techno Club scene.
Frank Rückert is telling stories with sounds and is often surprised by himself while working in the studio: 'I love to jam a lot, and out of this unexpected and surprising ideas, the best tracks were produced'. This is the philosophy of his musical work. And by the impressionistic piano ('For The People'), Asia-like music box sounds ('Metamorphic'), with synthie melodies flirting with the early nineties ('Seconds Of Your Time') or densely-woven Liquid-Dub ('Into the Biosphere'), your inner cinema is stimulated in the most pleasant way.

Uwe Bauch - Electric Garden

Artist: Uwe Bauch
P: 1995

There's something strange yet thought provoking about the cover graphics on this 1995 CD. 'The Room' introduces the album with organic effects, the sound of a heartbeat, and wispy synth refrains. 'Ready to Fall' takes over seamlessly with optimistic synth sweeps which are joined by a simple sequence a few minutes later. Unusually the sequence sounds unquantized as if played freehand. Subtle and effective. 'Run to Exit' layers repetitive riffs and snatches of flutey synth on top of a percussive sequence which emulates the rhythm of a train alà Kraftwerk's 'Trans Europe Express'. The title track features a constant DEEP drone pierced by electronic pings and assorted effects. Sequence territory is more fully explored on 'Lost World Part 1' (there isn't a part 2). Initially the approach is fairly conventional with deep bass sections fading in and out. Latterly though a more freehand approach is adopted to present a variety of patterns, unusually in almost total isolation. 'Jump in the Ozean' is a minimalist affair featuring swept synth sounds emulating abstract whale song and other such aquatic noises, while 'Asteroid B612' ends superbly in spacey Van Zyl territory. This is an album which will appeal to those who like brooding works of substance; "music to listen to in an isolation chamber" type of thing. Yet it isn't so challenging that it would frighten off those who like more immediacy in their music. I found the organic and improvised feel of the music very appealing. (GG)

V/A - Artificial Intelligence

Artist: V/A
P: 1992
This impressive compilation showcases some of the most cutting edge examples of electronic listening music in the early 1990s. All contributions are of a high standard and the music still sounds fresh and innovative in 2010. Polygon Window by The Dice Man opens the first disc on an undulating, mid-tempo beat, followed by a series of sonic gems like Musicology's Telephone 529 with its spacey voice samples, the rhythmically complex Crystel by Autechre and The Clan, a semi-symphonic soundscape by I.A.O.
Some of these artists were no doubt influenced by the German pioneers like Tangerine Dream but they've evolved beyond those structures to create something quite unique. Multiple layers endow certain pieces with a profoundly cinematic quality, e. g. Spiritual High by UP! which has a trance-like texture in which different types of vocals alternate. Musicology's Preminition, on the other hand, has R&B type female vocals throughout.
On the second disc my favorites include Link's percussive Arcadian, B12's solemn Scriptures, Autechre's quirky Chatter, Beaumont Hannant's bubbling & percolating Utuba, former Cabaret Voltaire member Richard H Kirk's plinking, plonking & lilting Reality Net and Seefeel's chiming & echoing Spangle which reminds me somewhat of Popol Vuh's majestic Nosferatu.
