Tangerine Dream - Orange Odyssey DVD

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2007

The 'Orange Odyssey' DVD is the complete live set TD performed Open Air on July 1st for the Inauguration Ceremony of the Paul Wunderlich Museum near Berlin.
You’ll see TD full of passion, strength and lady power. The very interesting merging of music, generic lights and full laser program has made this performance to a quite outstanding experience for those who could attend the concert. Especially for TD's diehard brigade it's a meal deluxe and hardly comparable to other moving pics from orange dreamland. Did you ever hear about the effectiveness of acoustic amphetamines – here you have it!

Tangerine Dream - Rockoon

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1992 / 2009
The album has a very rock-oritented dance sound especially with the title track but also has some very unusual New Age grooves such as "Penguin Reference" as well as the eerie "Lifted Veil". "Rockoon", recorded and published in 1992, was the first album conceived by the family powers.

Tangerine Dream - Valentine Wheels

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1997 / 2009
On November 6th 1997 Tangerine Dream performed a sold-out concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London. Here is the first half of the show - the "Vintage Set". You will hear such classics like "Beach Theme" from the legendary "Thief Soundtrack, the "Sorcerer" theme and many more. It is great that TD at times play some of the old material using the original tunes in their recent performances (e.g. 'Betrayal' or 'Poland' in this album), but also throw into the mix some of the newer stuff as well.

Tetsu Inoue - Yolo

Artist: Tetsu Inoue
P: 200
DIN 22
LTD 2000
DiN is proud to announce the release of Tetsu Inoue‘s ninth solo album, Yolo. Based in New York and with over 40 albums to his credit, including collaborations with such left-field luminaries as Bill Laswell, Atom Heart, Peter Namlook and Jonah Sharp, Tetsu Inoue has established himself as a musician equally comfortable in the contrasting worlds of ambient, sound installation, and computer music.
Intriguing and mysterious, Yolo, dissects a combination of Max random synthesized sounds and field recordings into fragments and particles which are then sieved through in microscopic detail. Inoue moves the focus with a speed that is at first disorientating but demonstrates the concise precision that has made his deserved reputation as an artist that is not afraid to explore and expand. In many respects it‘s like a diary of intimate impressions, internalized and deeply processed; a collection of fading super-8 memories moving jerkily in and out of the frame of the imagination.
There is no lengthy exposition or superfluous effect to be found on any of the tracks. Rather there‘s an insistence and urgency to cut to the chase. The music is composed and built-up from intricate details, cross-hatched and etched, forming complex portraits or abstract tones and vivid color.
Bristling with detail he nevertheless achieves all this with a graceful economy of language that is as spare and as telling as a haiku. The music of Yolo is a series of events connecting with each other though not necessarily connected; a patchwork that constantly mutates and renews itself. The faintest traces of harmony and melody drift in and out like smoke on the wind, gracing the underlying thrum of particular moments with a forlorn beauty. This is a strikingly crafted album that will appeal to fans of his previous work and draw in new converts with a music that is both substantial and timeless.

Ulrich Schnauss - No Further Ahead Than Today (Vinyl 2-LP)

Artist: Ulrich Schnauss
P: 2016
This is the double LP version.

The German producer is a prolific artist in the world of ambient, downtempo and synth music. In addition to classic albums like A Strangely Isolated Place, he's remixed a number of iconic acts like Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys and now counts as a full member of Tangerine Dream. No Further Ahead Than Today is his first album since 2012's A Long Way To Fall, and it comes via Schnauss's Scripted Realities label.
The music shows a renewed interest in more direct electronic sounds, and aims to substitute traditional verse-chorus-verse structures for more freeform atmospherics.

Vangelis - Rosetta
Artist: Vangelis
P: 2016
Inspired by the Rosetta Mission, an extraordinary and ground-breaking project by the European Space Agency [ESA] to land a probe on a comet for the first time in history, Vangelis has composed this suite of inter-connection.
Vangelis, the world-renowned musician, has composed this music specially for ESA and inspired by the Rosetta mission. Vangelis's music is often linked to themes of science, history and exploration, and he is best known for his Academy Award–winning score for the film Chariots of Fire, composing scores for the films Antarctica, Blade Runner, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Alexander, and the use of his music in the documentary series Cosmos, by Carl Sagan.
Vangelis said: "Mythology, science and space exploration are subjects that have fascinated me since my early childhood. And they were always connected somehow with the music I write."

Various Artists - AKH Records

Artist: Remy, Juno, Fractional...
P: 2006
Here we have a sampler of Remy's AKH Records label. All names except Remy's own are unknown to me. Lebenswelt starts this disc with "And My Life Is So Frail". I must say it's an interesting jazzy track with some synth coloring and a bit of FX but not EM. Anyway, on to Soapkills "Kadzoura". Sounds like a folk / classical piece, compete with female vocals! Gentle electronic rhythm / organs provide a nice backing. So, again, not EM, but nice to listen to anyway. It does make use of interesting sampling techniques but it ends up sounding like a mixture of Dub and Progrock. On to Iuno's "Spy" which opens with quiet piano playing but after a couple of seconds we can hear once again female singing similar to that heard on the previous track. I would say that there's little difference between this and "Kadzoura". In fact, they sound as if they were made by the same person. Another track by Iuno follows that features jazzy rhythmic backing and once again those female spoken / singed vocals. I must say it's nice stuff but all really not my cup of tea. Well, perhaps it will grow on me, as happened so many times with a lot of weird and different stuff. A track by Remy follows, called "In This Place". A mysterious bell-like melody casts its spell, echoing into the distance. Background Mellotron choir can barely be heard, as well as subtle strings. Great, moody stuff. A slow rhythm eventually appears and forms the basis for the last part of this highly repetitive, minimal track. We continue with Fractional's "Nirbel" that disrupts the flow with jarring rhythm / aggressive sounds. This is a nice track but it belongs to the Techno culture in my book. We continue with Sutrastore's "Succeed". Urban atmospheres are combined with broken rhythms. Looks like the album made a complete turn towards the IDM side of things. Male voice half-sings and is then joined by a female one for some sort of a chorus (year, right). Nice music, this one. "Central Station" by The After Affects only confirms my presumption about this sampler going for the IDM thing. Nice Pet Shop Boys-like processed vocals on this one. Remy closes the disc with "Visions". Mysterious piano notes make up for a nice intro. Well, actually the piano and the background pads are pretty much all we have on this number, plus a bit of a rhythm at the end. Nice track, though, and very different. I enjoyed it. The "AKH Records" sampler is something of a mixed bag, then, where Remy's own tracks were the ones I enjoyed the most.

Various Artists - Analogy Volume 1

P: 2006

There is always much to do amongst musicians and/or fans of em about analog or digital? Will we use the warmth of analog or the more reliability but less character of digital? This album has become a sort of contest where each artist could use only three genuine analog synthesizers to create a piece of music (although modern recording techniques were permitted).
"Analogy, volume1" contains music by some of the finest em-musicians of today.
The music ranges from traditional sequencer-based berlin school (create, syn, altres, modulator esp), via melodical (remotion, emmens, aerts, tescee), ambient (ellis and roach, 4m33s) to experimental (nerell, roach and oken, storey).
All music was played and recorded with care and love for the music and the instruments that it’s played on. "Analogy, volume1" is a great and eagerly awaited project.

Various Artists - Analogy Volume 2

P: 2006
This release from 2006 offers 80 minutes of analog electronics.
Featured here are exclusive tracks by:
Rogue Element: watery and pensive with dreamy textures laced with chirping birds.
Francois-pol Cornec: energetic melody with bouncy keys and sweeping tonalities. 4m33s: a moody approximation of a sunrise streaming across an alien landscape.
Gert Emmens & Ruud Heij: surging chords flavored with celestial atmospherics that accretes notable vigor of high appeal.
Russell Storey: part one of a spacey excursion with dramatic disposition.
James J. Clent: mounting electronic cycles spiced with astral guitar.
Craig Padilla: an ambient intro plunges into high energy terrain with hyperactive loops and twinkling quasi-rhythms.
Kees Aerts: a determined electronic riff is enlivened with sinuous e-perc and fanciful effects.
Zen Paradox: eastern influences tweak an environment of erratic beats and a rising surf of lush textures.
Stephen Parsick (from 'Ramp): a spooky dose of ricocheting effects amid a nebulous fog of haunting demeanor that escalates into a dense tapestry of rewarding sonics.
Create: a heavenly excursion into moody layers and growling electronics.
Altres: acoustic guitar accompanied by congenial synth riffs and mirthful embellishments.
Russell Storey: part two of the prior piece, in which things take a darker turn with eerie results.
Remotion: lavish keys swim in a sparkling pool agitated by churning non-impact rhythms.
Remy: portentous textures ascend with majesty and are seasoned with pulsing tones and glistening effects.
EM2: carefree cycles become dominated by more resonant riffs with gentle e-perc nibbling at the edges.
Ron Boots: a monumental finale as dense tones fuse with masterful riffs of growing vigor, rising to a coda of shrill eruptions.
Again, the musicians demonstrate inventive applications of analog technology coupled with diversity and satisfying acumen. Standout contributions from Parsick and Boots.

Various Artists - Liquid Sound Volume 2

Artists: Various Artists
P: 2003
Project is effectively Keller & Schonwalder and friends. They start this wonderful double CD set with 'Come and Taste the Band'. Fizzing drones travel through the ether as subtle percussion and faint guitar give a rather moody atmosphere. It's only in the last third that any rhythmic content is added but even then it is subdued so as not to disturb the lovely serene feel.
Tom van Draft is really Thomas Fanger (from Fanger & Schonwalder, Mind Flux etc). His track 'Blue Halo' starts with a nice melodic sequence augmented by gentle electric piano touches. A rhythm enters in the third minute developing a nice relaxed groove.
Arcanum & Otarion team up for 'Homo Novus'. Various sequences and loops emerge through rather orchestral sounding pads as we start a slow but very effective build up which hits the spot perfectly. Very subtle rhythm and percussion are added around which a beautiful melody, rather low in the mix, weaves its spell.
Fanger & Schonwalder are responsible for the hugely popular 'Analog Overdose' series. Here we have a new track called 'Abgetaucht'. If you liked Volumes 1 and 3 of that series you should also go for this. A sequence can be heard which starts low in the mix but rapidly rises to the surface and is joined by high hat percussion. More pulsations are added in the form of a slow bass sequence / loop. The sequences seep into the consciousness wonderfully taking over the mind. I am sure a lovely little melody had already been there a couple of minutes before I noticed it as it fitted in so perfectly with everything else that was going on. More lovely 70s sounding lead lines come and go- boy do they hit the spot! Virtual guitar can momentarily be heard in the twelfth minute. It adds that little extra excitement without dominating. What a wonderful track- mesmerizing but never boring.
The first disc concludes with 'Salzbad' by Electric Orange. Initially the main feature is a fine splashing sequence but as the track progresses it reminded me of some early Sky label recordings by the likes of Tyndall or even Adelbert Von Deyen.

It is probably the second disc which will excite many however, even before listening to the music, as it contains tracks (all at fifteen minutes or over) by Spyra (with Chris Lang), Rainbow Serpent and AirSculpture. This is the first new material from the last two of these acts in ages.
'Nenikekamen' by Spyra & Lang starts us off. Straight away it's Klaus Schulze who comes to mind. We float on tranquil soft pads then an excellent slow sequence emerges backed by a cello / flute combination (I think!) which weaves a lovely haunting melody. The sequence mutates this way and that increasing in speed considerably in the fifth minute. Subtle rhythm in added low in the mix accompanied by yet another lovely lead.
Fanger & Kersten provide one of the most contemporary offerings on the album with 'Waterproof Guitar'. Infectious rhythmic loops and sampled (or vocoded) utterances of the title develop into quite a relaxed but also extremely 'cool' groove.
'Deep Dive' by Rainbow Serpent makes use of rather metallic sounding eerie wind blown effects over which a shuffling rhythm keeps being heard then disappears like tumbleweed momentarily being seen before being blown into the distance. Just before the five-minute mark some very faint NASA type samples can just be heard. This is extremely atmospheric stuff but also rather vivid picture music. A slow flutey melodic lead floats over the top heightening the haunting qualities still further.
At about the half way mark a slow rhythm is added giving a little structure but never intruding too much or destroying the delicate atmosphere so painstakingly created.
By it's title 'Not Raving, Floating' by AirSculpture might also be expected to be something of an ambient affair but this is not the case. Sure we get a drifting, though sonically powerful, introduction but it isn't long before a typical Sculpture lead can be heard and then a sequence with their signature all over it. It becomes louder and louder, more leads are added then another cracking sequence falls into formation- then another! Simply awesome. Welcome back AirSculpture! (Now when the hell are you going to get your 2003 National Space Centre gig ready for release?!).
We finish with 'Liquid Dawn' by Keller & Schonwalder. For the most part this is an ethereal melancholy masterpiece darker than anything on 'Noir'. A sequence is added in the ninth minute which does drive things forward a little but thankfully the mood stays wonderfully morose. Beware the false ending by the way, just when you think it is all over there is a bonus five minutes of music! Lovely stuff too. Sorry to spoil the surprise guys.

Waveshape - Arkos 1

Artist: Radium (Waveshape)
P: 1998
Incl. Comic and special packaging.
Return of the cosmic curiers.
This is a lavishly presented boxed CD with a 16 page A5 comic/booklet containing some stunning imagery and extensive sleeve notes which portray a Space related concept.
Waveshape’s sound has been drifting towards ambient/dance recently and here’s the manifestation of that trend, though it is firmly towards the “chill out” end of the bpm spectrum. When the rhythms really kick in they are pulsating and the sequences rarely deviate from the complex matrices which they construct. Waveshape’s sequencing prowess has obviously been focussed on this album to great effect.

Waveshape - Wellenformen

Artist: Waveshape

CUE 263
Being produced as a live-tape in 1991 and first being sold as MC in fall 1992, this is now the new edition of "Wellenformen" in digital format.
Waveshape was inspired by older analogue instruments like Moog and Farfisa Organ and Eminent String Ensemble. Pieces of music with an almost classic structure impressing by their volatility but also vigorous color the content of which is explained by Waveshapes own musical language.
