Jolliffe, Steve

Born in England on 28th April 1949, Steve Jolliffe has been an active composer for forty years. His extraordinary career started in 1967, when he met Rick Davies and formed a group called The Joint, which evolved into Supertramp. Jolliffe's interest in classical music led him to the "Berlin High School for Music" in 1968. He was the first student to be accepted who could not read music. While at the school, he met Edgar Froese, and together with Klaus Schulze toured Germany for a year as one of the earliest incarnations of Tangerine Dream. Steve left Tangerine Dream. Steve rejoined Tangerine Dream in 1978 and together with Froese, Christopher Franke and Klaus Krüger, recorded the album Cyclone. The quartet toured Europe that year.

Steve Jolliffe - Escape

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 1991
Escape finds Steve Jolliffe blending leading-edge digital technology with the amber resonances of traditional acoustics. The album starts out with a sneaky, waltz-like number displaying rich melodies intertwined with exuberant rhythms. The music at times is wild and eclectic in its progressive expression, escaping into soothing and somber tomes, distant and ancient. His musical sketches reveal an underlying complexity, imbued with classical undertones and beauty. Atmospheric and stretched out yet concise, Jolliffe’s music plays proper homage to Tangerine Dream, with artistic nods to Patrick O’Hearn and Mark Isham, to Norwegian synthesists Oystein Sevag and Erik Wollo and to French countrymen Bernard Xoloti and Jean Michael Jarre. The digital-orchestra sound and Teutonic touches, coupled with spacey phrasing even bring to mind the Erdenlang label.

Steve Jolliffe - Journeys out of the Body

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 2010
Limited edition with autograph by Steve.
Journeys Out of the Body is a set of deep atmospheres from Steve Jolliffe. Composed and created after a series of experiences that extended his awareness of other realities, Jolliffe had several out-of-body dreams in 1981 that he describes as being "half awake" and that energized his creativity and enhanced his artistic performances. The music on this CD confirms those statements. The soundscapes are smooth and dreamy with expansive atmospheres and organic textures. Jolliffe enhances his electronics with smooth acoustics from flutes and guitars. His saxophone is forgettable, but does not detract from the quality of this release. It will appeal to fans of John Flomer, Kevin Braheny, and Jon Jenkins.

About an hour after finishing this album,
I fell asleep and dreamt that I met an old musician friend in my garden,
I invited him in for a drink saying, its a shame we never progressed with what we were doing all those years ago.
We then preceded to create an album together.
After we had finished I walked him back out to the garden saying, I really enjoyed that.
Yes he said, it was Magical

Steve Jolliffe - Omni

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 1997
Jolliffe’s music is often a diverse animal, running in ambient fields and fusion pastures. This is an extremely melodic outing from 1997: after a minimalist intro piece, the music is full of popping keyboards, dreamy bubbles and snappy rhythms. The 56-minute CD wraps up with an epic finale enhanced by ricocheting rhythms and punctuated nicely by a piano interlude. The cosmic vacuum stirs with lively electronic riffs, cavorting to the lure of uplifting rhythms. Despite its frequent swells of power, this music is soft, delivering rises and crescendos amidst a very peaceful sonic palate.

Steve Jolliffe - Poland

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 2004
LTD 300

Recorded live in Jelenia Gora Poland during Ricochet Gathering EM Festival, September 11, 2004.
Track 1 has excerpt of lost Tangerine Dream music from 1967 with Steve Jolliffe and Edgar Froese on guitar.

This release from 2006 offers 65 minutes of fervent music recorded live in Jelani Gora, Poland, on September 11, 2004.
Having played with such EM greats as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, Jolliffe has enjoyed a long solo career producing albums of delightful electronic music for nearly two decades. This latest shows him alone on stage, armed with piano, keyboards, flute, and an extraordinary predilection for nimble creativity.
Dramatic piano passages establish a strange cafe milieu that becomes even stranger as eerie electronics enter the mix. Dark textures coalesce, immersing the stage in a fertile fog that sparkles with effects and sporadic strings and other instruments. Eventually, twinkling piano asserts dominance over these peripheral embellishments, guiding the miasma into a more orderly flow. And gradually, the auxiliary samples adopt melodic demeanor and compliment Jolliffe's live performance, lending snappy rhythms and sighing tonalities to the easygoing piano.
Live flute and electronic urgency often appear in tandem. The accompanying electronics surge with bouncy, dark energy, while the frolicsome flute cavorts with passionate abandon. Before any outbursts have the opportunity to become too boisterous, Jolliffe reigns them with nimble-fingered piano, generating foundational drama that reaches out and grips the soul with classical eloquence.
The CD features three long tracks, allowing each composition ample room to grow and flex and indulge in mischievous variations.
The first track utilizes a sound excerpt of Edgar (Tangerine Dream) Froese guitar from 1967.
