Darshan Ambient - A Day within Days

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2010
Nine songs are included and like 2004's Autumn's Apple there will be a track that features Allison's vocals. The title track in particular carries a lot of emotional weight as it is dedicated to the memory of his very close friend and mentor Juan (Naux) Maciel who passed away in February 2009.
The music for A Day Within Day's was recorded primarily between September 2009 and March 2010 at his home studio but unlike From Pale Hands To Weary Skies, Allison incorporates electric guitar and bass as well as the Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Zero-G's Morphology, Miroslav's Philharmonik and East-West Ra VST plugin's for a gorgeous sound that DA fan's will absolutely love.

Darshan Ambient - Autumns Apple

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2004
While still a wonderful ambient experience, there is a very different feel to Autumn's Apple that can be traced to Allison's love of soul records he collected as a child. That and a very distinct chill-out lounge flavor of the CD give this release a fascinating meld of soul-groove and ambient electronica. Autumn's Apple is a dedication to family, children and love of tradition.

Darshan Ambient - Dream in Blue

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2011
Dream In Blue is the latest release by the celebrated artist Darshan Ambient (aka Michael Allison). As with previous Darshan Ambient releases, Allison's melodies and harmonization are sublime, and his rhythms, while complex, evoke a sense of effortlessness that leave the listener engaged and fulfilled. At times, the album brilliantly weaves Jazz motives through ambient forms, while never abandoning the compelling, signature style of electronic music for which Darshan Ambient is known.
The album began as an homage to Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and on a few of the tracks Allison expertly explores new territory, straddling the line between ambient and jazz, while building on the powerfully appealing electronic sound heard on earlier releases, From Pale Hands To Weary Skies and A Day Within Days. As Michael says, “There is certainly a sonic bridge between ‘ambient’ and ‘jazz’ music, a logical extension between the two genres.”
The diverse selections range from the upbeat “Sun Fade” through the melancholy trumpet solo of “Silent Smile (Angelo’s Song)” to the pure ambience of “Waiting On A Dead Man’s Horse,” which could almost be at home on an ambient opus written by electronic legend Brian Eno. Through all, Michael Allison’s musical sensibilities make Dream in Blue a profoundly enjoyable experience from beginning to end.

Darshan Ambient - Falling Light

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2012
Falling Light is the fifth inspired instrumental release on the Lotuspike imprint by award-winning ambient artist Darshan Ambient (aka American-born multi-instrumentalist and composer Michael Allison). The trademark hypnotic and heartfelt style that has come to define all Darshan Ambient releases is certainly present here in the skillful use of multi-layered percussion, synth textures, bass, and guitar grooves. Allison’s unmistakeable compositional style is in top form, delivering thoughtful melodic phrases and themes with a familiar atmosphere.
Picking up where 2011’s Dream In Blue left off, which skillfully straddled a delicate musical line between ambient and jazz, Falling Light finds Allison moving more towards an almost ambient Americana sound at times. The deliberate use of lap steel and slide guitars blended with synth textures that seem to stretch to the horizon, brings to mind visions of wide open spaces, big skies and endless possibilities. As Allison says, “It’s very visual. There are some beautiful lap steel guitar sounds that I used a little on the last album, but wanted to completely feature on this one; they add a gorgeous twang to some of the tracks. There are a few tracks dominated by the use of piano, but most have the wonderful sound of the lap steel/slide guitar — very dreamy.”
Michael Allison effortlessly crosses many musical borders journeying throughout this remarkable Darshan Ambient recording; From the opening jazz-tinged title track, the melancholy Mark Isham-esque trumpet of “Small Blue Ones,” the hypnotic groove that surfaces in the midst of “A Boat Beneath A Sunny Sky,” the soul-searching depth of “The Immense Window,” to the closing classically-inspired choral fugue that is “Forgotten Sky.” With it’s warm washes of ambient color and elegant melodic passages, Falling Light blazes a trail into the wondrous hues of an ambient Americana sunset.

Darshan Ambient - Lingering Day

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2017

As the tenth Darshan Ambient release on the Spotted Peccary label, Lingering Day is the perfect album to mark such a milestone. The album features all the hallmarks that listeners have come to expect from a great Darshan Ambient release; effortless chilled grooves, glowing ambient textures, signature guitar melodies, delicate piano lines, processed electric guitar work, and nuanced synth-string passages are all present and accounted for throughout the fourteen tracks of Lingering Day. Michael Allison is the lone creative force behind Darshan Ambient, single-handedly composing, performing and recording all of the music himself, and for Lingering Day his skills are in top form. Allison has created what could quite possibly be the ultimate album for Darshan Ambient fans, infusing the tracks with all of the trademark characteristics and nuances that listeners have enjoyed so much from his music over the past fifteen years. The textural ambient soundscapes that dominate tracks like “The Seven Sleepers” “Bee’s Fade” “Hand In The Clouds” and “Umbra” are truly sublime and gorgeous. The upbeat rhythms and skilled guitar work found on “Mover” “Kissing Crust” and “The Seven Sleepers Part 2” are executed with artistry and grace. The easy comfort of “Silver” and “White Calm” wrap the listener in a warm blanket of familiarity, while the jazz-flavored “Erroneous” and “The Lost Hunter” are ideal anthems for a lazy day. With its serene atmospheres and cinematic orchestrations Lingering Day portrays a true sense of wonder and space, and from the delicate rhythm of “Snowflake” that opens the album with a restrained urgency, to the ambient textural title track that closes the album by slowly stretching time to savor those final moments, Lingering Day may very well be the most perfect Darshan Ambient album to date.

Darshan Ambient - Little Things

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2013
Little Things, the seventh Darshan Ambient release on the Spotted Peccary/Lotuspike label, delves deep into the details that slip through the cracks of everyday life, as veteran composer Michael Allison delivers twelve tracks filled with mystery and wonder, shadows and twilight. Masterfully crafted ambient synth textures, guitar loops and effortless rhythmic grooves lay the foundation for lush guitar phrases, pulsing strings, electronics, and poignant melodies, in part highlighted by a darkened piano, a distant trumpet, or a fragile and touching wordless vocal.
While not deviating from the familiar signature sound that fans will immediately recognize, Little Things as a whole is noticeably more atmospheric than recent Darshan Ambient  releases.  Allison notes, “In many ways I’ve gone back to my ambient roots on this album. Although there are still rhythms on many of the tracks, it’s a much more ethereal album. The music has a very dreamlike quality to it.”  Dreamlike and ethereal for sure, but with a deep, mysterious, introspective quality.  Allison continues, “My intention was to make a darker album. Something a bit heavier than previous releases.”  This darker more enigmatic side to the music helps to emphasize the album’s theme of uncovering and celebrating the wonderful little details that exist below the surface of our normal routines.
Whether it’s the slow-building stillness of “UnUsual Thursday,” the metro-hypnotic tension of “W. 52nd,” the cautious yet intimate moment captured by “Soft Portrait,” or the hopeful and uplifting power of “Fields,” Darshan Ambient’s Little Things offers an elegant arrangement of notes and chords that reflect what we all take for granted; music of the unnoticed beauty that always surrounds us, but rarely gets a second thought.

Darshan Ambient - Re:Karma

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2005
Re:Karma is a collection of music selected by the artist to represent a career of elegant music making. This CD includes remastered "best of" tracks and previously unreleased material, as well as some new tracks created just for this release. Having had a career that has spanned over ten years, Michael Allison of Darshan Ambient has released a compilation of work from earlier discs and unreleased tracks. "Re:Karma" is a fine collection of songs that show the breadth of his talent as well as introducing a side of his work that some fans might not be aware of. Fans of Darshan Ambient's ambient work will no doubt be impressed by tracks such as "The Ocean Whispers", "A Walk Along the Ganges" and "Slow Drift", beautiful pieces that are very much in keeping with the lush ambience of "Providence" and "The Zen Master's Diary". Of particular note is the previously unreleased track "The Cool River" which opens the disc, a track taken from 1994 where a slight melody plays overtop a sustained background of pads. Serene, dreamlike, and beautiful in it's flow, "The Cool River" is a beautiful piece that stands with the best of his more ambient moments. Tracks like "Boundless" and "Tiger in the Grass" are slightly more indicative of the overall sound of the disc, percussion driven pieces where piano and synth lines float along the soundstream in chilled laid-back grooves. Of these more groove-based tracks, "Soul Chameleon" stands out as a complex percussive piece where shimmering tones and pads mingle and dance around eachother. Very inspired. Without doubt, "Re:Karma" is an excellent collection, fully displaying the talents of a very accomplished and talented electronic artist. Both an excellent place for new fans to be introduced to the music of Darshan Ambient, and a place for older fans to become reacquainted. Highly recommended.

Darshan Ambient - Songs From The Deep Field

Artists: Darshan Ambient
P: 2014

One of the most famous images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope covers only a tiny speck of the sky, and yet it reveals a bewildering assortment of galaxies at various stages of stellar evolution. This mesmerizing image, known as the “Hubble Deep Field,” is the inspiration for Darshan Ambient’s eighth Spotted Peccary release, Songs From The Deep Field – eleven tracks of layered pulses, melodic vibrances, and foundational grooves that evoke a human expression of awe-inspiring vastness that stretches the very fabric of imagination.
Songs From The Deep Field - running just over an hour – builds and releases layer upon layer, ranging from pure space to kinetic free fall; from weightless drift to rhythmic power. Filtered throughout the album are passages that bear resemblance to the works of Patrick O’Hearn, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Jonn Serrie, and other pioneers of ambient space music, all orbiting around a core comprised of the complex layers and familiar atmospheres of Darshan Ambient’s enticing sensibilities. The result is a heavenly blend of ambient synth textures, lush guitar loops, pulsing strings, driving rhythms, electronics, and poignant melodies; a beautiful array of ambient electronic instrumentation that reaches for the stars and beyond.
While the far reaches of space may appear vast and endless, there is a unique design that allows the elements and regions to interact with great precision; development, deconstruction, birth and disappearance, all in the flash of an eye. In similar fashion, each track on Songs From The Deep Field is complete unto itself, yet the expansive shapes and moving passages of these indelibly unique compositions all spiral together on the album into a cohesive expression of the artists deep inspiration.
To fully embrace the universe is to surrender to the fragility that underlies the immense power and force that unites us all, and Songs From The Deep Field is a heartfelt tribute to the limitless mysteries of the cosmos.
